African-American storytelling event

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will celebrate Black History Month with “Storytelling in the African American Oral Tradition” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown. This free event with Jocelyn and Robert Dabney will explore African-American history and culture through song, poetry and spoken word.

Jocelyn Dabney is a storyteller, actress and retired high-school librarian from Youngstown. Her husband, Robert, accompanies her with his singing and drumming. They are charter members of the Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers. For information, call 330-743-2589.

The Yes Men artist to give free lecture

YOUNGSTOWN

Igor Vamos, a professor of media arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a member of performance-activist duo The Yes Men, will give a free lecture at McDonough Museum of Art, 624 Wick Ave., at 5:10 p.m. Monday.

The Yes Men impersonate captains of industry and surprise business audiences with satirical actions that comment on social and environmental issues. The movie “The Yes Men Fix the World” was a selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Vamos is also renowned for culture jamming – the act of using existing media to comment on that media or on society in general.
