Boardman High School Drama Guild presented “A Mid Summer Nights Dream” Feb. 7-9 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
Director Tyler Moliterno said the group has been preparing for the performance since December, only taking time off for winter break.
“We haven’t really done Shakespeare in Boardman, so this was something fun and different,” Moliterno said.
This is Moliterno’s first performance as director, and he chose the play because it was something new, and he was very familiar with it.
In 2012 Moliterno played Nick Bottom in Cleveland State’s production of the show.
“It’s great because I know it’s a funny show, people don’t often think of Shakespeare as funny, but this show is timeless and entertaining,” Moliterno said.
About 27 students will be performing in the production, according to Moliterno, who said he was able to find a way to include every student who auditioned.
“We have a lot of talent, and this show allows us to add characters in certain places, so I included them all,” Moliterno said.
Main characters include “the lovers” Lysander, played by Daniel Gordiejew, Hermia, played by Alyssa Wilson, Demetrius, played by Tim Flower, and Helena, played by Meganne Evans.
“Mechanical” leads include Nick Bottom, played by David Kimpton, Puck, played by Lilly Klisiewizz, Titania, played by Elizabeth Amstutz and Oberon, played by Dante Ovirtez.
“The show is very timeless,” Moliterno said. “It is just as relevant today as it was then.”
Moliterno said that he chose to dress the characters in a more modern style, without placing it in any specific time period.
“The style of the show is very modern, it includes modern elements and keeps the feel of the original show,” Moliterno said.
Each set of characters has a different style of costume, including earth tones for the mechanical characters and a punk look for the fairies.
This is the last performance of the year for the Boardman Drama Guild.
