Canfield Village Middle School students showed off their school spirit at the school’s annual Winter Sports Pep Assembly on Feb 8.
Students, faculty and staff gathered in the school’s gymnasium to recognize members of winter sports teams, including seventh- and eighth-grade wrestling, seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleaders, seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball and seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball.
CVMS physical education teacher and athletic coordinator Bob Tinkey welcomed everyone to the assembly.
“Welcome to the CVMS 2018-19 winter sports pep assembly. We are here to honor the kids involved in winter sports. Hats off to them for balancing sports and academics. Before we start I’d like to thank the administration, custodians and Miss Koch for putting this program together,” Tinkey said.
The cheerleaders led the students in cheers and performed cheers and dance routines throughout the assembly. The CVMS pep band, under the direction of Band Director Jim Volenik, also performed throughout the rally and revved up the crowd with their musical selections, such as “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “Hang on Sloopy.”
Tinkey informed the crowd that the wrestling team was at the EOWL Tournament in Liberty and were unable to attend the assembly.
“Coach Conley wanted me to let you all know that the wrestling team is 11-2 and were the Canfield Challenge Tournament champions, the Lake Tournament runner-up and EOWL Dual Meet champions,” Tinkey said.
Tinkey then proceeded to read the names and records of the wrestling team members.
Before the introduction of the cheerleaders, Tinkey thanked them for their support.
“We really appreciate their support and all they do for the teams,” Tinkey said.
Each member of the seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleader squads was introduced by two of their teammates.
Tinkey then introduced seventh-grade girls basketball coach Mike Merritt to introduce the seventh-grade team.
“The seventh-grade girls team is 11-2. They have given everything they have at every practice and every game,” Merritt said.
Merritt introduced the seventh-grade players and said he is very proud of the team.
Tinkey then turned the microphone over to two eighth-grade players, Abby Muckleroy and Kate Sahli, to introduce the eighth-grade girls basketball team.
Eighth-grade coach Jim Harmon took to the podium to praise his team.
“I’d like to thank Mr. Rubin, Mr. Flood, Mr. Tinkey, the custodial staff, Mr. Jugenheimer for running the clock and all the coaches who have helped us this year. Our eighth-grade team is undefeated. These girls possess three things that make their team great. They have commitment, work ethic and unselfishness. There is not one player. They are 15 strong. They have done a fantastic job with that this season,” Harmon said.
Tinkey turned the microphone over to seventh-grade boys basketball team members Paul Bindas and Tony Russo, who introduced the seventh-grade team.
The eighth-grade boys basketball team was up next and was introduced by team members Jameson Beck and Stephen Maszczak.
Tinkey took to the microphone one last time to thank the audience and the pep band.
“Thank you to the CVMS pep band for pumping us up today. They do as much work and practice as anyone preparing for their events. They’ve only been playing for four years. You did an excellent job. And thank you everyone for being a great audience. Now it’s time to make some noise with our victory cheer,” Tinkey said.
To end the assembly, the cheerleaders led the crowd in a V-I-C-T-O-R-Y cheer. First, they encouraged the entire crowd to cheer and then the students cheered by grade in a contest to see who could cheer the loudest for the winter sports teams.
