Girls seventh grade-basketball beat Austintown
The Boardman girls seventh-grade basketball white team defeated Austintown red in a first round tournament game with a score of 37-27 on Feb. 9. Mackenzie Riccitelli led all scorers with 12 points. JaSayia added nine points, Mary Catherine Werth added six points and Mackenzie Kelso and Olivia LaCivita both contributed five points. The Lady Spartans are 11-5.
Boys eighth-grade basketball defeats Lakeside
The Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball white team beat Lakeside Middle School with a score of 51-47 on Feb. 11. Prabh Singh scored a career-high 12 points and added five rebounds. AJ Nigro added 11 points. Alex Micco scored 10 points, including three three-pointers. Cam Stanley had eight assists and finished with six points,including two free throws that sealed the victory with :08 left.
Varsity wrestling wins tournament
Boardman High School boys varsity wrestling defeated Lakeside 65-12 and finished in first place at Double Dual: Lakeside/Howland on Feb. 11. Dominic Vennetti, Sam DeJoseph, Ashton LaBelle, Dan Fetty, Kareem Hamdan, Nate Thompson and Christian Akron all had wins while Ray Cmil had a tech fall and Sean and Michael O’Horo and Blaine Strines had pins. Boardman defeated Howland 45-34 with wins from Sean and Michael O’Horo, Dominic Vennetti, Nathan Thompson, Blaine Strines and Tyler Rea and wins from Ray Cmil and Tawfiq Abuenaaj.
Girls seventh-grade basketball falls to Canfield
In their final game of the season, the Boardman girls seventh-grade basketball maroon team dropped a close game to Canfield Middle School with a score of 13-9 on Feb. 11. Scoring all of Boardman’s points was Ava Bosnjak with nine. The team ended the season 9-8.
Girls junior varsity basketball defeats Cardinal Mooney
The Boardman Lady Spartans junior varsity team defeated Cardinal Mooney by the score of 35-31 on Feb. 11. Scoring for the Spartans were Serene Khatib with 8 points and Jenna Olexa with 8 points, Tini Zheng scored 6 points, Bailey Moore had 5 points and Josie Porter scored 4 points.
Girls varsity basketball beats Cardinal Mooney
The Boardman girls varsity basketball team beat Cardinal Mooney High School with a score of 57-56 on Feb. 11. The Spartans topped Cardinal Mooney in overtime on a Raegan Burkey jumper with under 5 seconds to go. Burkey led the team in scoring with a game-high 22 points, which included four 3-pointers. Katie Stamp recorded another double-double by scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Her 21 points were a career high. Cate Green and Cailyn Covan each chipped in with 6 points.
Boys seventh-grade basketball downs Lakeside
The seventh-grade boys basketball white team improved to 13-3 on the season as they beat Ashtabula Lakeside with a score of 44-31 on Feb. 11. Jack Ericson’s 14 points led all scorers, while Jaden Payne added 10. Landon Mitchell added five points and Ryan Conti and Noah Ziak each scored four points.

Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball white team fell to Austintown blue with a score of 35-30 on Feb. 12. Alex Micco again led the Spartans with 12 points, including two 3-pointers in the first quarter. Isaiah Torres finished with six points.
Boys eight- grade basketball defeated by Canfield
Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball maroon team was defeated by Canfield Middle School with a score of 34-33 on Feb. 11. Boardman’s bench was strong, with Antoine White hitting two three-pointers in the final two minutes. Maroon was led by Deon Elliott with eight points, White chipped in seven and Nate Christmas and Brady DePietro each had six.
Boys eighth-grade basketball beats Warren
Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball maroon team beat Warren Gold with a score of 44-32 on Feb. 12. In all, the Spartans forced 10 turnovers in the fourth quarter and had a 16-3 scoring advantage. Eight out of nine Spartans scored in the game, and four different players hit at least one 3-point shot. Brady DePietro led the way with a triple double 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Nate Christmas added 12 points.
Eighth-grade girls basketball defeats Howland
The eighth-grade girls basketball white team beat Howland Middle School with a score of 35-22 on Feb. 12, in the semi-final round of the AAC Tournament. The win improves the girls to 14-4 on the season. Gia Triveri led all scorers with 18 points. Cami Goske contributed a strong offensive game with seven points. Also making key shots in the game were Natalie Davis and Bella Martin with four points each.
Varsity boys basketball downs Louisville
The varsity boys basketball team beat Louisville High School with a score of 66-59 on Feb. 12. Derrick Anderson led all scorers with 22 points, to go along with six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Che Trevena was also in double figures with 12 points, to go along with five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Ethan Andersen put in seven points, including a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. Connor Miller and Tommy Fryda each scored six points and Cam Kreps contributed five points. The win was Boardman’s 13th in a row, improving their record to 17-3 on the season.
Freshman boys basketball team defeats Warren
The Boardman freshman boys basketball team will advance to the final round of the AAC tournament after defeating Warren Harding by a score of 61-32 on Feb. 12. The Spartans were led by Cam Thompson, who scored 12 points and Ben Alvarico with 11 points. DJ Evans and Anthony Hightower scored eight points each. Also scoring for Boardman were Terence Thomas, Seth Cervello and Tommy Nawrocki with four points each.

Girls junior varsity basketball beats Ursuline
The Boardman Spartans girls junior varsity basketball team ended the season on a high note winning their final two games over Cardinal Mooney on Feb. 11, and against the Ursuline Irish by the score of 42-26 on Feb. 13. The Spartans were led in scoring on the night by freshman Emma Mills with 12 points. Tanna Ortega hit three triples to end up with 11 points. Jenna Olexa hit for five on the night and Bella Larch had a three-pointer.
Girls varsity basketball falls to Ursuline 48-38
The Boardman Girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with loss to Ursuline by a score of 48-38 on Feb. 13. Katie Stamp led the Spartans in scoring and notched another double-double by hitting for 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Raegan Burkey chipped in with nine points and had six assists. Alicia Saxton added eight points and Cailyn Covan was two for two behind the arc for her six points.
Boys eighth-grade basketball wins AAC
The Boardman eighth grade-boys basketball maroon team won the AAC tournament championship with a 31-27 decision over Austintown blue on Feb. 14. An 11-2 third quarter gave Boardman a three-point lead headed to the fourth. In the final quarter, Boardman controlled the action. After several back and forth defensive stops, Brady DePietro put the game away with a free throw at the :06 mark. On the night, DePietro led Maroon with 11 points, Austin Ward added six and Antoine White came off of the bench for five second half points.
Boys freshman basketball team finishes with perfect season
The Boardman freshman basketball team finished off a perfect season by defeating Canfield in the AAC tournament championship by a score of 66-43 on Feb. 13. Luke Ryan and DJ Evans both scored nine points in the second half, helping to put the game out of reach. Evans was the leading scorer for Boardman with 16 points, Luke Ryan added 14 and Anthony Hightower had 13 points. Terence Thomas was also in double digits with 10 points and Cam Thompson had seven points.
Boys varsity basketball beats Canfield
Boardman celebrated Senior Night for Shay Eicher, Cam Kreps, Che Trevena and Nick Torres by beating Canfield with a score of 63-41 on Feb. 15. Derrick Anderson led all scorers with 16 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. Daeone Martin had 12 points and seven rebounds. Trevena had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Tommy Fryda had back to back 3-pointers on his way to eight points. Kreps scored five points and grabbed eight rebounds to go with three assists. Torres and Ethan Andersen each had five points. Andersen also pulled in nine rebounds and had five blocked shots. The win was Boardman’s 14th in a row, improving their record to 18-3 (9-0 AAC).
Junior varsity wrestling competes at tournament
Nathan Thompson and Anthony Baglama cruised to titles, while Tawfiq Abuenaaj finished second, Ashton LaBelle finished third, Dylan Slipkovich finished fourth, Sammy deJoseph finished third, Gavin Fernandez finished forth, Blaine Strines finsihed third and Jason Robinson finished third.
Boys varsity bowling beats Warren 2331-2330
The Spartans defeated Harding by one point with a score of 2331-2330 on Feb. 5. Scores for Boardman were Jacob Burkey 165-247 (412); Seth Lucansky 166-225 (391); Landon Bryant 151-144 (295); Rees Beckman 138-156 (294); Chase Caroline 175 and Joe Tarazewski 140.
Boys varsity bowling falls to Howland
The boys varsity bowling team was defested by Howland with a score of 2321-2315 on Feb. 12. Boardman scores were Rees Beckman 226-203 (429); Joe Taraszewski 179-198 (377); Jacob Burkey 171-187 (358); Seth Lucanksy 179-142 (312); Chase Caroline 204 and Landon Bryant 153.
Girls varsity bowling beats Howland
The girls varsity bowling team beat Howland with a score of 2247-2242 on Feb. 12. Boardman scores were Alayna Turillo 171-214 (385); Lexus Petrich 166-196 (360); Fatima Rehman 201-155 (356); Josalyn Hubbard 183-148 (331) and Harley Realty 158-135 (293).
Girls varsity bowling places second at Division I sectionals
The girls varsity bowling team finished as runner-up at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament held at Stow-Kent Lanes on Feb. 15. The top three teams advance to the District Tournament. Lexus Petrich placed second individually with a 574 series and games of 199, 160 and 215. Teammate Josalyn Hubbard was fourth after rolling games of 205, 143 and 212 for a 560 series. Teammate Sam Hoffman was sixth with games of 177, 171 and 195 for a 543 series. Harley Realty had games of 131, 179 and 142 for a 452 series. Alayna Turillo bowled games of 160 and 137 and Fatima Rehman bowled a 145 score.
