Mississippi State sweeps Penguins

Starkville, Miss.

Junior infielder Blaze Glenn hit his first home run of the season as the Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday against No. 9 Mississippi State to conclude a three-game opening weekend series at Dudy Noble Field. The Penguins fell 14-2 in game one before dropping the finale by a final of 8-0.

In Game 1, the Penguins (0-3) were held to three hits. Blaze Glenn homered off 2018 MLB Draft pick JT Ginn for a two-run home run in the first inning to give YSU an early edge, but Mississippi State scored in each of its first five at-bats to take control.

YSU got singles from Phillip Glasser and Zach Lopatka while Glasser, Lucas Nasonti, Zach Farrar, Trevor Wiersma and Nick LaBrasca each walked in the contest.

Jake Magnum and Elijah MacNamee led the Bulldogs with three hits and two RBIs a piece. Tanner Allen went 2-or-3 with a three-run homer, a three-run double and a game-high six RBIs.

Chad Coles suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over two innings. Greg Dunham worked four innings out of the bullpen while Preseason Horizon League Freshman of the Year Travis Perry tossed two scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance.

Ginn earned the win in his first career start for MSU after surrendering two runs on two hits and striking out seven in five innings of work.

In the series finale, Mississippi State (3-0) scored in five different innings and shut down the Penguins’ bats.

Cody Dennis, Nick LaBrasca and Trevor Wiersma each recorded two singles in the game while Lucas Nasonti also had a base hit. The Penguins threatened in the fifth and seventh innings but could never break through. YSU left a total of nine runners on base.

Jon Snyder took the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out five, but allowed a solo home run to Foscue in the second inning.

James Keegan pitched five shutout innings for the Bulldogs. He struck out six with four hits and a pair of walks.

The Penguins will return to the diamond Feb. 22 to begin a three-game series at nationally-ranked Florida State.

Swimming

YSU finishes strong in HL Championship

Indianapolis, Ind.

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team had five swimmers score in a pair of events to highlight the final day of competition at the Horizon League Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Tiphaine Saint-Gilles had the best finish of the Championships for the Penguins finishing sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, the Penguins had five swimmers finish in the top 16. Aida Jurinovics was eighth with a time of 18:09, Josie Preski won the consolation final with a time of 17:36 to place ninth, Taci Miller was 11th with a time of 18:18, Elizabeth Wompey was 14th at 18:13.57 and Taylor Bishop was 16th with a time of 18:29.04.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Jurinovics was eighth with a time of 2:05.46, Zsani Csado won the consolation final with a time of 2:06.04 to finish ninth, Rachel Shipp was 14th with a time of 2:09.54 and Taylor Tofil was 15th with a time of 2:10.91 and Rhianna Acosta was 16th with a swim of 2:12.50.

In the 200 back, Allyson Wilson had a time of 2:05.86. Also in the 100 free, Hannah Olger had a time of 53.69 seconds, Paris Krug swam a time of 54.65 seconds.

The Penguins finished last in the team standings with 263 points.

Oakland won with meet with a total of 823. It’s the Golden Grizzlies’ sixth straight conference championship.

IUPUI came in second with 667.5 points and Milwaukee was third with 521. Cleveland State (500.5), Green Bay (317) and Illinois at Chicago (303) rounded out the standings.
