Canfield High School seniors Lilly and Cece Economus collected socks and donations of fleece to make scarves for the homeless for their National Honor Society community service project. They then invited all students to help them make the scarves on Jan. 16.

The scarves and socks will be donated to a local homeless shelter.

“We’re not sure yet where we are going to donate the socks and scarves. We want to make sure they go to a local shelter with the most need for them,” Cece said.

Both girls said they chose this project because they wanted to actually produce something that would help people instead of doing a fundraiser.

“We wanted to do something that a lot of people from school could be a part of. We wanted to get away from doing a fundraiser where sometimes you don’t know where the money will actually go. We wanted to put in the actual work and provide something that people would need,” Cece said.

“We wanted to actually do something. Like cutting the fleece and making the scarves. And we wanted what we made to be put to good use and would help people. We feel better knowing where our scarves and socks are going and we know that people will use them, instead of raising and donating money,” Lilly said.

Lilly and Cece also said they wanted to put in the time and effort to help the homeless.

“We really thought about what people might need and we wanted to provide that. We are hoping our scarves and socks get some good use. We like it that we know where the socks and scarves are going and who we are helping,” Cece said.

“We are doing this out of the goodness of our hearts, not just because it’s our NHS project. We wanted to make a tangible item that came from people’s time and effort and we hope they will provide some comfort,” Lilly said.

With a group of about 15 students, the Economuses were able to make 74 scarves and collected 50 pairs of socks to donate to a local homeless shelter.
