Multiple science fair awards for a Canfield High School student

CANFIELD

A Canfield High School sophomore has won multiple science fairs she joins on her own accord.

Aurora Fares, daughter of Maria Elena Fares and Buddy Fares, is modest about her winnings of multiple “Superior” ratings at Regional Lake-to-River Science Fair and State Science Day.

She recently received much praise at the 70th annual State Science Day. Her accolades included yet another “Superior” rating from the Ohio Academy of Science judges, a State Science Multi-Year Award and an Award of Excellence from the Ohio University Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Aurora said she used to go to private school in which enlisting herself in outside science fairs was mandatory. Now, she just keeps doing it.

“I’m grateful to be able to do it,” she said. “Some don’t have this opportunity, and I like to experiment and explore. I enjoy it.”

Her projects, which have their start back in her fourth-grade year, are mostly based off of electricity and voltage, a subject she said fascinates her.

And she gets plenty of support at home from her mom, who is a nurse, and her dad, who is an engineer.

“We are extremely proud of her,” Maria Elena Fares said. “God bless her and her time-management skills. She’s just really self-disciplined and motivated.”

That’s the hard part for Aurora – the time management.

“Although I do enjoy doing it, it’s hard with cross country, track and my other AP [advanced placement] classes,” she said. “It’s hard to fit it in on the side, but it’s worth it to me.”
