Man gets 35-year sentence for shooting at police

YOUNGSTOWN — A man convicted last month in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court of shooting at two city police officers was sentenced today to 35 years in prison in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Several city police officers and two officers from Boardman looked on as Judge Maureen Sweeney handed down the sentence to Gerald Wainwright, 26, who was wounded in the exchange of gunfire with two officers Jan.27, 2018 at Hillman Street and Princeton Avenue.

The officers tried to talk to Wainwright who was walking in the middle of the street early in the morning wearing a mask when he ran from officers then started firing a gun at them.

An internal affairs investigation cleared both officers in the shooting.
