Wild finish for puts Mickelson in 4-way tie

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.

Phil Mickelson is in a familiar place in familiar conditions at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

A four-time winner, Mickelson was among four players tied for the lead after the second round was completed Saturday morning because of rain.

He avoided the worst of the weather, though he had to survive a wild finish of a birdie, three straight bogeys and a closing birdie for a 4-under 68 at Spyglass Hill. That put him at 10-under 133, tied with Lucas Glover, Paul Casey and Scott Langley.

Jordan Spieth, who endured a cold, hard rain for the final two hours Friday before play was suspended, was part of the tie at 10 under until he returned Saturday morning and bogeyed his last hole for a 68 at Spyglass and was one shot behind, along with Jason Day.

Mickelson was the first to finish at 10-under 133. Glover started strong in tame weather at Pebble Beach and shot a 6-under 66 to get to 10-under 134, while Langley (69 at Spyglass Hill) and Casey (7-under 64 at Monterey Peninsula) narrowly finished at 10-under 133 ahead of the horn that ultimately stopped play for the rest of the day.

Spieth had a struggle on the par-5 seventh, hitting out from under a tree, over another one and through the fairway. His third shot was just right of the green, and Spieth immediately called for a ruling when he saw a fan’s hand swat the ball onto the green.

The rules official talked to the fan, who said he threw his hands up when the ball landed in front of him, and that he did not intentionally hit the ball. That meant Spieth played it from the green, instead of chipping from that spot.

Spieth two-putted for par. A minute later, the rain kept falling and Johnson had to have the green cleared for his putt.

Johnson, who had hit his second shot into the water, missed from 10 feet for bogey. He was 2 over for his round, seven shots to par behind.

BARWON HEADS, Australia

Second-round leader Kim Kaufman holed out from the bunker for birdie on the par-3 seventh hole which helped her take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the LPGA’s Vic Open.

The American otherwise had a forgettable third round with four bogeys and a double bogey in tough windy conditions late Saturday for a 3-over 75. France’s Celine Boutier (69) and Su Oh of Australia (74) were tied for second.

In the European Tour’s men’s event being played alongside the women’s tournament, Australian Wade Ormsby, who shot 70, will take a two-stroke lead into the final round. Callum Shinkwin of England (66) and Australian Matthew Stieger (65) were tied for second.
