As their final class project, Canfield High School students in Angela Alexandrides’ Culinary Arts class created food trucks and pitched their ideas to their teacher, classmates and judges on Jan. 10.

The students worked in teams to create a menu with 10 items, a price structure, the truck design, name and logo. The students were also required to figure out what type of equipment they needed for their food truck and the overall cost of the equipment.

Food trucks the students pitched included Curt’s Crazy Cakes, specializing in pancakes; Wonder Waffle, which took inspiration from superheroes in creating their waffle dishes; Fekety’s Firestoned Flatbreads, which offered five main dishes and five desserts; Knot Just Pretzels, which offered five entrees, three sides, two desserts and dipping sauces and, finally, Mac N Shack, which featured a full menu of macaroni and cheese items to taste.

During the pitch, students also served one menu item, with School Resource Officer Steve Garstka and Associate Athletic Director Mike Cochran tasting them and serving as judges. The students were also judged on their pitch presentation and the mini cardboard food truck they made and decorated to look like the theme of their pitch.

After much deliberation, Garstka and Cochran decided on a winning team. Alexandrides announced the winning team, Fekety’s Firestoned Flatbreads, and presented them with the Golden Spatula trophy.
