Chemistry students at Canfield High School were going for the gold during the school’s Chemistry Olympics.

In December and beginning of January, all of the chemistry classes participated in the Olympics, under the direction of their teachers Pat Pavlansky and Tom Slaven.

Chemistry students from the first semester divided into teams of four and competed in seven different events designed to apply the concepts learned during their time in the courses. Events included, Mystery Problem, Slime Drop, Chemistry Music, Kinetics Competition, Chemistry Cooler, Micromole Rockets and Oxygen Combustion Competition. The events commenced after the Olympic torch ‘lighting ceremony.’

The students competed for medals in the individual events and an overall champion trophy. The events were designed to allow any student that has completed the Chemistry 1 course to be successful.

“This is our second year for the Chemistry Olympics. We reviewed last year’s event and made a few changes and adjustments. We did a few events last year and it has grown this year. We tweaked it and made it better and hope to keep making better and better each year. We wanted to have fun with it and have the students have fun with it. We wanted to do something different, something extra for the students,” Pavlansky said.

The overall results for the second Chemistry Olympics were: first place (gold) - Holly Eberly, Zoe Kabetso, Jenna Allender and Karaline Lisowski; second place (silver) - Emilia Aey, Anna Kan, Chloe Kalina, Tony Pannunzio, Jake Hostetter tied with John Gomez, Andrew Morchak, Jackson Crist; third place (bronze) - Katie Dysert, Claire Audia, Aurora Fares and Olivia Love

The materials and prizes for the competition were funded through a $1,500 American Chemical Society Hach Grant.
