Jobs skills workshop available at YWCA
YWCA Mahoning Valley will host a job skills workshop beginning Feb. 11. The workshops will run from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday through Feb. 28. Participants will receive instruction in career exploration, resume writing, interviewing practice, job stability and financial literacy. The workshops are open to women and men, age 18 and older. Participants who attend all sessions will receive a $100 stipend. YWCA’s job skills workshops help participants increase their employability and remove barriers to gainful employment to meet the demands of a challenging and changing job market. Canfield High School hosts eighth-grade orientation
Canfield High School’s eighth-grade information and orientation session is Feb. 21. The evening includes tours, demonstrations, registration information, course selection assistance, National Honor Society information and graduation requirements. Parents and students will have the opportunity to ask questions and speak with teachers, guidance counselors and administration. From 6-7 p.m., tours and displays will be offered in the cafeteria. At 7 p.m., there will be an informational session in auditorium.
MSVC-MOAA to meet on Feb. 22
The next meeting of the MSVC-MOAA will be on Feb. 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the Consolidated Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. Friendly Squares February square dance
Local square dancing group, the Friendly Squares, will host their monthly square dance on Feb. 9, from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Valentines will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Boy Scout breakfast celebration
The public is invited to join Scouts BSA Troop 25 for breakfast as they recognize the 109th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America on Feb. 10 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall of Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Prepared and served by the members of the troop, the menu will consist of pancakes and sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, orange juice, milk or coffee, all for a monetary donation for your breakfast. Tickets are not required. The members of both Cub Scout Pack 25 and Scouts BSA Troop 25 will also be participating in the Scout Sunday services at the church for the 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services with the Rev. Abby Auman, District Superintendent of the Mahoning Valley District of the United Methodist Church, giving the message at the 10:30 a.m. service. Courtright joins local bank team
Farmers National Bank continues to grow its Commercial Lending Team with the addition of Thomas Courtright. Gathering Place event to be Feb. 11
There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Feb. 11.There will be an actor who portrays President McKinley. In addition, Buckeye Hospice will have a nurse available to provide free blood pressure readings. This is ongoing at all monthly meetings. Lunch will be provided following the program. NSS Life plans annual meeting
The National Slovak Society (NSS Life) local assembly 731 will host its annual meeting at 1 p.m. on March 2 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Election of officers will take place during this meeting. Members are asked to bring ideas and details to help plan assembly fraternal activities for 2019. Youth members are invited to attend and offer input about youth activities. They will also review activities sponsored by the NSS home office. Lunch will be served. Volunteers needed for fine arts show
A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley
Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with champagne and hor d’ouvres. Featured at the event will be a silent auction, food, drinks, dancing to Ovation and DJ Bryan Ladd, a 50/50 raffle, psychic readings, Spin and Win presented by Komara Jewelers and more. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Canfield PTA giving cash away
The Canfield Local Schools PTA is hosting a ‘Crazy Cash Giveaway’ fundraiser. A total of 1,000 tickets will be sold at $50 per ticket. The grand prize will be $10,000. The winning ticket will be drawn on Feb. 22, during the boys varsity basketball game at Canfield High School. The winner need not be present. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Chair yoga
The Canfield library will have a chair yoga class every Friday throughout February at 10 a.m. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults.
Mah-Jongg Mondays
Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun every Monday in February from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets not provided. This event is for adults.

Saturday movie matinee
Visit the Canfield library Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday movie matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Movie will be a newly-released DVD rated G to PG-13. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.
Tales to tails
Come to the Canfield library on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. and read to our favorite therapy dogs. Helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or we’ll find one for you. For children grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group. For school-age children.
Coloring for grown-ups
Visit the Canfield library on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. to tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze of coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only. There will be a Valentine’s Day theme.
Science cafe
CRISPR is a growing technology that is used to edit genes. On Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, learn how CRISPR is used, what effect is this having on science research, and the outlook of this new technology. This event is for adults.

Line dances also involve repeating series of steps, so if you get lost, can easily catch up with the rest of the class. This class at the Canfield library on Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines. This event is for adults and teens.

Visit the Canfield library on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. to learn how you can connect with family and friends on Facebook. The librarians will help you personalize your profile so that you can start posting, sharing and liking right away. If you need help setting up an account, contact your library before the class. This beginning Excel class will discuss cell size, basic math, number formats, AutoSum, cell appearance, math in unconnected cells, and printing. At this monthly book club at the Canfield library on Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m., a lively discussion will occur of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the Canfield library’s book club room. For February, the chosen book is ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. A morning session will take place on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. You may attend one or come to both. This event is for adults. The book for March will be “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult.

Informational meeting for incoming kindergarten families
The Canfield Local School District is hosting an informational meeting for parents or guardians of all incoming kindergarten students on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at C.H. Campbell Elementary School. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.
Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner
On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A dinner buffet will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $75 each, with a table of eight for $600. All proceeds go directly to the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund, which has been established by the Stoops family to provide tuition scholarships for students who attend Cardinal Mooney.
