Sausage and pancake breakfast set for Feb. 3
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus #3930 will sponsor a sausage and pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 3, at the parish center, 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The menu will consist of sausage and a variety of all-you-can-eat pancakes and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and $3 for children 12 and younger.
Knights of Columbus sponsor breakfast event
There will be a breakfast at the Community Kitchen sponsored by the Knights of Columbus #3930 on Feb. 9. The Community Kitchen is located at 551 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Pancakes, sausage and a variety of pancakes will be served from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. There is not a charge for this event but a free will offering will be gladly accepted.
Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley
Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with champagne and hor d’ouvres. Featured at the event will be a silent auction, food, drinks, dancing to Ovation and DJ Bryan Ladd, a 50/50 raffle, psychic readings, Spin and Win presented by Komara Jewelers and more. Honorary chairs for the event are John and Denise York, DeBartolo Corporation and Patt and Doug Sweeney, Sweeney Chevrolet. Donation for the evening’s festivities is $100 per person. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A holiday program will be held Feb. 13.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Evening story time
This once-a-month evening story time features stories, movement and early literacy education. The next event will take place on Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The evening story time is open to anyone, but geared toward preschool children and their families.
Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Guess the picture book
Can you guess the picture book from the cut-up cover? One winner will be chosen at random from correct entries at the Austintown library. This event is for children of all ages for the month of February during library hours.

Can DNA testing help you determine your ancestry? The Austintown library will examine this process, acknowledging the benefits and drawbacks, at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 5. This monthly book club gets together to read and discuss books that are soon to be released in the theaters. Come talk about books, movies, have a small snack and meet new people. Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners at the Austintown library on Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Mental health first aid for adults
Mental Health First Aid Training is aimed at helping people whose profession frequently brings them into contact with individuals exhibiting problems related to mental illness, substance use, poverty or homelessness. The library is partnering with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and Alta Care Group, which will provide instructors. Participants in this two-part series will learn risk factors and warning signs, as well as strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Each participant will also receive a First Aid book. Session one will be on Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. and Session two will be on Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. at the Austintown library. The sessions are available to library staff, as well as people who have jobs in which they could encounter individuals needing this type of assistance. The program is thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and awarded by the State Library of Ohio, under the Library Services and Technology Act.

Friends of Austintown Library meeting and presentation
Patricia Sweeney, Mahoning County Health Commissioner, will discuss the health concerns of the residents of Mahoning Valley, especially in regard to heart health and diabetes at this event on Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. She will also provide suggestions for prevention of these serious health concerns.
Movie night
Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during a movie at the Austintown library on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. Movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
YSU and PLYMC present small business basics
Spend an evening at the Austintown library on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. learning the ins and outs of small business with Joseph Angelo, Serial Entrepreneur and the Director of YSU’s Entrepreneurship Center, and some of his students. This is your opportunity to get help from people on the frontline of entrepreneurial studies. Director Angelo and his students will present on a number of areas related to small business and also provide the opportunity to learn practical business skills through hands-on demonstrations. Edward Koltonski, Business and Investment Librarian, will also be in attendance to show the numerous small business resources available through the public library. Cardinal Mooney High School to host community open house
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a free, public community open house from 1-4 p.m. on Feb. 10. The school is located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available. 4-H community open house set
A 4-H community open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Greenford Ruritans Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Feb. 7. The open house is an opportunity to talk to adult 4-H leaders and current 4-H youth members and ask questions. Attendees will be able to find out more information about 4-H and how to join a club. Some of the more than 200 projects will be available to see and experience. These projects include more than just livestock, such as, veterinary science, clothing and textile science, communication, creative arts, photography, genealogy, writing, food and nutrition, healthy living, leadership and citizenship, money management, science, technology, engineering, math, natural resources, woodworking and more.
Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.
Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner
On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A dinner buffet will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $75 each, with a table of eight for $600. All proceeds go directly to the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund, which has been established by the Stoops family to provide tuition scholarships for students who attend Cardinal Mooney. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.
