Carpatho-Rusyn group to present its annual Vatra

The seventh-annual Vatra (bonfire) celebration of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 7 at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, 7754 South Ave.
The event will include a Divine Liturgy in the church at 6 p.m. The celebration will feature homemade Slavic food, including smoked bacon with rye bread, stuffed cabbage, pirogi, haluski with dumplings, kolbasi, krupi barley soup, cucumber and sweet onion salad and desserts. The kitchen will be open from noon to 6 p.m.
There also will be genealogy material, including old village maps, to trace family roots; sales tables with heritage items; dancing and folk musicians Dean Poloka, Tom Katrenich and Bob Bartko.
Folk dancers will teach Slavic dances.
Pianist in concert at Bliss Recital Hall
YOUNGSTOWN
Pianist Svetlana Belsky will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 in Bliss Recital Hall, lower level of Bliss Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.
The free concert, titled “Into Darkness: Music Written Between 1910 and 1920,” will feature compositions by Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Busoni and Ravel, among others.
Belsky is a recitalist and chamber pianist, noted for her rapport with audiences and stylistic versatility. She has appeared internationally at many concert series and recitals.
She has received awards for her interpretation of new American music and has introduced compositions by more than a dozen living composers.
Currently the coordinator of piano studies at the University of Chicago, Belsky earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and a doctorate at the Manhattan School of Music.
