Diaz leads Scrappers past Doubledays

Yainer Diaz went 5 for 5 and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 9-3 win over the Auburn Doubledays Monday night.
Diaz led off the second inning with a shot over the left-center field wall for his second home run.
Diaz added a sacrifice fly in the third, a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth.
Felix Fernandez hit his first home run of the year in the fourth, and Michael Cooper drove in a pair of runs throughout the game for the Scrappers (34-34).
Anthony Peroni hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the seventh for Auburn (25-43).
Francisco Perez (1-0) allowed three hits and a walk, strking out two in five scoreless innings. Gregori Vasquez pitched the final four innings for his first save.
Niomar Gomez (1-5) allowed seven runs — five earned — on six hits and five walks. He struck out two in 31/2 innings.
The Scrappers and Doubledays will play the final game of the series today. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
