Scrappers' comeback stalls vs Crosscutters

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers were in position for their second consecutive comeback. But the Scrappers fell 3-1 on Saturday night to the Williamsport Crosscutters.

The Scrappers (33-33) loaded the bases to start the ninth inning. Bryan Lavastida drew a bases-loaded walk, but Brian Marconi recorded three straight outs for his first save of the season.

Nate Fassnacht scored on a groundball from Nicolas Torres in the bottom of the third. Henry Pujols’ seventh error of the season led to the score. Rudy Rott’s two-run single in the fourth increased the lead to 3-0.

Daniel Espino (0-1) allowed three runs — two earned — on two hits and a walk. He struck out nine in four innings.

Tyler Burch (4-1) pitched five scoreless innings for the Crosscutters (27-39). He allowed two hits and struck out four.

The Scrappers will travel to Auburn for a three-game series with the Doubledays. The first game of the series is today at 1 p.m.
