Three combine in Scrappers’ no-hitter

WILLIAMSPORT

Hunter Gaddis, Matt Waldron and Luis Sanchez combined to throw a no-hitter during an 8-0 win against the Williamsport Crosscutters Thursday night.

All three pitchers threw three innings and the only baserunners allowed were a walk from Waldron and via a Henderson De Oleo error. Gaddis struck out six, Waldron fanned four and Sanchez had one strikeout.

A five-run first inning gave the pitchers a sizeable lead to work with. Will Brennan an RBI double, Yainer Diaz and Bryan Lavastida also added doubles. Johnathan Rodriguez hit a triple.

Poland Stadium closed until Saturday

POLAND

The Poland High School stadium will be closed today when the turf is reconditioned.

The stadium will reopen on Saturday.

Cavs’ owner back home after stroke

CLEVELAND

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has been home for nearly a week in Detroit as he continues to recover from a stroke suffered in May.

Gilbert had spent the past two months in a rehabilitation center in Chicago. On Thursday, Quicken Loans CEO Jay Farner provided a brief update on the 57-year-old billionaire businessman.

Gilbert, who founded Quicken Loans, suffered the stroke on May 26 after he was taken to a hospital by a family friend. He was immediately taken into a surgery for a catheter-based procedure, which doctors have credited with being a key to his recovery.

He spent more than a month at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, before going to the rehab facility.

In a video recorded for Quicken Loans employees, Gilbert said earlier this month he was grateful for the outpouring of support.

Ohio State books Arkansas State

COLUMBUS

Ohio State will host Arkansas State in 2022.

Arkansas State made the announcement Thursday in a news release.

The teams will face off on Sept. 10, 2022, at Ohio Stadium in the first meeting between the programs.

Ohio State will open its 2022 season at home against Notre Dame on Sept. 3 before playing Arkansas State. The Buckeyes will close their nonconference slate at home against Toledo on Sept. 17.

The last time Arkansas State played a Big Ten team was 2017, against Nebraska. Arkansas State will play at Michigan in 2020 before facing Ohio State two seasons later.

Pirates release recovering Cervelli

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Pirates are parting ways with veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli, who’s worked his way back from another concussion and is hoping to catch on with a contender.

The Pirates announced Thursday they had requested unconditional release waivers on the 33-year-old Cervelli. He’s played 34 games this season, hitting .193 with one home run and five RBIs.

Cervelli has suffered several concussions in his career, and hasn’t played in the majors since his most recent one on May 25.

Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington says the club wants give Cervelli — who recently completed a rehabilitation assignment — an opportunity to sign with another team rather than sit the bench.

Patriots’ safety indicted on drug charges

LACONIA, N.H.

New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung has been indicted in New Hampshire on a charge of cocaine possession, according to court paperwork released Thursday.

A Belknap County grand jury indicted Chung, 32, on Aug. 8.

Members of the Meredith, New Hampshire, police department were called to Chung’s residence June 25 “on a call for service” and obtained evidence leading to the felony drug charge, Belknap County Attorney Andrew Livernois said in a statement.

Livernois declined to provide additional details on the case.
