Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association is celebrating 100 years of amateur radio this year. The club is asking any former members or anyone with information about former members to reply. Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter ABWA will meet for ABWA Day on Sept. 22 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and lunch is at 1. The event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Network Council ABWA Chapters of Mill Creek, Tri-Gold and Youngstown Charter. Dinner will include roast pork, stuffed chicken breast, stuffed shells, mashed potatoes, green beans, tossed salad and dessert. Cost is $22 and the public is welcome. First Friday of Greater Youngstown Speaker Series will host an evening dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. Dr. Faggioli, professor of historical theology at Villanova University in Philadelphia will speak on “From Vatican II to the Sexual Abuse Crisis: The Challenges for the Catholic Church – Political, Institutional and Theological.” There will be an opportunity for questions afterward. Niles Friendly Squares will begin weekly square dance lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St., Niles. Gene Hammond will be the instructor and cost is $6 per lesson. Lessons will take place each Tuesday through April 14, 2020. There are also monthly dances at the SCOPE Center. POLITICAL GROUPS
Canfield Republican Women’s Club will host its next meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Ohio state Rep. Don Manning, R-59th, of New Middletown, will be the guest speaker. He will discuss what it is like to be a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. Also in September will be voting on changes to the by-laws. These changes will be submitted to the members of CRWC by e-mail. Members are asked to review these and if there are any concerns or objections to send those to Nancy Epstein at grandmao@zoominternet.net. The deadline for objections or concerns is Monday. The changes will be voted on as one and there will be no discussion prior to the vote.
RELIGIOUS GROUPS
Seton III will meet for its annual Mass and luncheon at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 for service at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman and lunch will follow at in St. Matthew Hall at St. Charles. Junior Seton Circle will be the hostess club and Seton III and IV will be the guests. Reservations must be made to Ruth Spencer by Wednesday.
Youngstown South Christian Women’s Connection will host “A Country Fair” luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. The event will feature Marty Campana, auctioneer. Guest speaker will be Alice Sems of Chardon, and her topic will be “A Humorous Look at Decision Making.” Cost is $14, which includes lunch. Struthers Historical Society will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Amvets Post 44, 305 Elm St. The speaker will be Dan Welch, teacher in the Campbell City School District, who will speak about his experience as a tour guide during the summer at Gettysburg National Military Park. The public is welcome. Anyone who attends is asked to donate brushes, combs and puzzle books to assist veterans. Tours of the SHS museum will be given after the meeting. Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter makes Alzheimer’s caregiver support groups available free of charge, open to all caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one with affected by the disease or another form of dementia. The meetings are as follows: Canfield: fourth Thursday at 1:30 p.m., Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St.; Howland: second Tuesday at 7 p.m., Howland United Methodist Church, 730 Howland-Wilson Road, NE.; North Jackson: third Monday at 2 p.m., Antonine Sisters Adult Day Center, 2675 N. Churchill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Youngstown, will offer its Grief Share to all who have suffered a loss. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. and will take place Sept. 12 through Dec.12. Meetings will be in the church parlor on the second floor of the educational building. “Surviving the Holidays” will be offered at 2 p.m. Nov. 17. Grief Share is a 13-week program that offers videos such as “Is This Normal?” “The Challenges of Grief,” Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger” and more.
