Exhibition details Soviet Jews protest

The opening reception for “Power of the Protest: The Movement to Free Soviet Jews” will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. It is free to the public.
The panel exhibition, created by the National Museum of American Jewish History, brings to life the personal stories of American Jewish activists and Soviet Jews – known as refuseniks. It will run through Sept. 29.
“Power of the Protest” explores the significance of this dramatic and risky social justice movement – what The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg has called “the most successful human rights campaign of our time.”
Party on Plaza, Panerathon on tap

Two events will take place downtown this weekend.
A Party on the Plaza featuring The House Band and RDNA will take place Friday evening, from 6 to 11 p.m. on North Phelps Street. Admission is free.
On Sunday, the annual Panerathon foot race will take place with activities centered at Covelli Centre.
The race route will be closed to traffic at 7 a.m. Sunday, so downtown area motorists should expect detours..
Art gallery accepting submissions for show

Trumbull Art Gallery’s 55th annual juried exhibition will open Sept. 7 and run through Nov. 2.
Art submissions will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, which is on Courthouse Square.
Artists living within 100 miles of Trumbull County who are at least 18 years old are eligible. Work in any medium will be considered, though 2D artwork must be ready for hanging. There is no size restriction. To enter, complete and sign the entry form and labels, which can be found attrumbullartgallery.com.
Attach labels to the back upper-left corner of 2D artworks or the underside of 3D artworks and hand deliver the entries to the gallery during the drop-off date. The fee for entry is $20 for TAG members or $25 for nonmembers, which entitles the artist to submit up to two entries. A third entry can be submitted for an additional $5.
Online notification of acceptance will be posted Aug. 27.
Art works on display in outdoor gallery

Fellows Riverside Gardens’ Outdoor Gallery is exhibiting original works from local artists Tony Armeni, Marvin Bankhead, Mike Gibson, Ed Hallahan and Daniel Newman.
Their works range from steel to wood to topiary and is for sale. The gallery is in the grassy area behind the Gazebo.

Museum tickets for ‘Michelangelo’
CLEVELAND
The Cleveland Museum of Art has announced ticket information for “Michelangelo: Mind of the Master,” a major international loan exhibition featuring nearly 30 drawings by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564). Organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum in conjunction with the Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands, the exhibition will be on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art from Sept. 22 to Jan. 5.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a group of drawings with an illustrious provenance from Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689), on loan from the Teylers Museum.
Tickets are $15 ($10 for adult group rate, and seniors; and $5 for students; free for children 5 and under).
