Robert Kroeger of Cincinnati is seeking information about old local barns in Mahoning County for The Ohio Barn Project in which he does oil paintings of the barns and writes essays about them. Kroeger plans to include Ohio’s 88 counties and has 27 left. He is seeking information and plans to tour the southern aspect of Mahoning County, specifically around Western Reserve Road.

Dahlia society to host show

The Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society will sponsor its 16th annual dahlia show from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the center concourse at the Carnation Mall, 2500 W. Author to visit school Friday

YBP to host artist at gardens

Yellow Brick Place will host Walter Herman, an earthworks artist, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks. Association to host Alzheimer’s program

The Alzheimer’s Association will present a Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers program at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at East Palestine Memorial Public Library, 309 N. Market St. Caregivers can learn what changes to expect as the condition progresses including effective communication tips, care options for the future, coping with relationship changes, and ways to maintain their health as a caregiver. Dancing lessons

The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 on the stage in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Literary society to host best-selling author

The Literacy Society of Youngstown will host its 16th Literacy Society event Sept. 26 at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. The event will feature Andrew Gross, best-selling author of “No Way Back,” “Everything to Lose” and “One Mile Under” and more. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and appetizer and dessert reception. The presentation will take place at 7. Tickets are $65 per person and includes membership in the Literacy Society, and autographed copy of “The Fifth Column” and a complimentary glass of wine. Proceeds benefit the Carol A. Bacon Literary Society Fund. The event is sponsored by Denise DeBartolo York, Huntington Bank Trust – The Frank & Pearl Gelbman Charitable Trust and The Muransky Cos.
