Youngstown advances in PONY World Series

WASHINGTON, PA.

Youngstown clinched their second trip to the Division Championship of the PONY League World Series on Tuesday with a 9-5 win against Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico was eliminated as Youngstown advances to face Chinese-Tapei.

Anthony Malagise hit a two-run home run and Lucas Bertolasio, Ben Slanker and Dominic Fornataro each hit a double.

Braeden D’Angelo struck out eight in five innings to get the win.

Harbaugh lashes out at Cincy’s Fickell

ANN ARBOR, Mich.

Coach Jim Harbaugh is lashing out at Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell, who says Michigan didn’t support a transfer’s attempt to immediately play for the Bearcats.

Harbaugh said Tuesday he told Fickell he wouldn’t lie about what he knew regarding the transfer of James Hudson.

Fickell told The Athletic that Michigan didn’t support Hudson’s attempt to play for the Bearcats right away.

The seldom-used offensive lineman transferred to Cincinnati last year and the NCAA denied his waiver request to be eligible this season.

Hudson says mental health prompted his transfer, but his request was denied because he did not reveal the issues at Michigan.

Harbaugh says Fickell called him in March, trying to coach him what to say about the events leading up to Hudson’s transfer. Harbaugh recalls telling Fickell he was going to tell the truth.

“I told him, ‘I’m not going to lie,”’ Harbaugh recalled telling Fickell said.

Harbaugh said he talked to Fickell about Hudson switching from offensive to defensive line.

Giants’ Tate suspended for four games

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate has had the appeal of his four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL’s policy on performance enhancers turned down.

The decision by an independent arbiter was announced Tuesday and means the 10-year-veteran will miss the first four games of the regular season, starting with Dallas on Sept. 8.

Tate, who signed a $37.5 million contract as a free agent with the Giants in March, announced the suspension in a Twitter post on July 27. He said he intended to appeal it and felt his case had merit because he was using a fertility drug prescribed by a doctor.

The appeal was heard by a member of an independent appeals panel in New York last week.

Tate will be eligible to practice with the team until the start of the regular season.

Ollie wins ruling versus UConn

HARTFORD, CONN.

The arbitrator in the dispute between UConn and Kevin Ollie says the former basketball coach is protected by a union contract when it comes to the standard the school must meet in proving his ouster was justified.

The union agreement requires a showing of serious misconduct.

UConn had argued that Ollie’s personal contract superseded union protections, allowing it to fire him for a broader range of offenses.

The arbitrator, in a decision dated July 31, found that Ollie did not give up his union protections when signing his contract.

The arbitrator plans hearings to determine whether UConn fired Ollie in March 2018 for just cause, or if he is owed more than $10 million that was left on his contract.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions last month placed the UConn program on two years of probation and sanctioned Ollie individually for numerous violations of NCAA rules during his tenure.
