Southwoods Health opens express care

Southwoods Health has opened Southwoods Express Care, 7629 Market St., a facility that provides medical care seven days a week that is non-urgent but still requires immediate attention, such as the flu, coughs and colds to sprains, strains and minor injuries.

“We continue to focus on the community’s needs by expanding our services and helping patients gain convenient access to quality care,” said Ed Muransky, Southwoods Health Chief Executive Officer.

Southwoods Express Care is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary. For information, call 330-965-4880 or visit SouthwoodsExpressCare.com.

Thomases Family awards $15,000 grant

The Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation recently awarded the Florida Lions Eye Clinic a $15,000 grant, payable over two years, for its Gift of Sight program.

“Dr. Richard Shapiro, medical director at the clinic, is a valued member of our community,” said Lisa Long, Federation financial resource development director. The funds are used to purchase medical/surgical supplies and medicines for patients, and to help maintain quality care for not just local patients but for all of Florida, as they are the only free clinic in the state, said Long. Since 2008, the Florida Lions Eye Clinic has provided free eye care to over 10,000 patients.

Down Syndrome’s Buddy Walk is Sept. 22

Buddy Walk Æ of the Valley 2019 is Sept. 22 at Eastwood Field in Niles. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the Buddy Walk beginning at 1 p.m.

The event is Down Syndrome Association of the Valley’s main fundraiser, which celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2018 in the greater Mahoning Valley. More than 2,500 people attend this walk that raises money via pledges, sponsors and entrance fees. Visit Dsav.org for details and online registration.

Net proceeds from DSAV Buddy Walk of the Valley 2019 go to programs and services provided by the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley for individuals with Down syndrome throughout Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

Businesses and clubs host free family activities at the event and display pamphlets and brochures at their tables.

There are six ways to participate in the Buddy Walk Æ: Create a team; join an already-formed team; ask to be placed on the DSAV home team; be a sponsor; host an activity sponsored by a business or club, or attend as a spectator by paying a $13 entrance fee at the gate.
