Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Aug. 19
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ For more information, contact Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.
Camp Stambaugh 100th anniversary celebration
The Camp Stambaugh 100th Anniversary Committee invites the public to come on out on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Although the camp is located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, parking will be at Gate 12 (on Leffingwell Road, east of State Route 46S) at the Canfield fairgrounds. Attendees will be shuttled to the camp and back. Handicap accessibility is being provided. A $20 donation is required for anyone 7-years-old and older (6 and under are welcome). Food vendors are available all-day selling refreshments as well as a Trading Post on-site. For the Scouts, Sept. 21 will begin early that morning at the Canfield Fair Grounds where the Scouts will camp overnight, and at 7 a.m. will begin parading east on Leffingwell Road from Gate 13 to Camp Stambaugh. After arriving at Camp Stambaugh, a new gateway dedication will take place at 8:30 a.m. and at 9 a.m. the opening ceremony will take place. Shuttles will begin running immediately after the parade arrives at the camp. The activities will end at 5:00 pm as all Scouts will head back to the Canfield Fair Grounds for dinner and beginning at 8:00 pm a show and closing ceremony at the Canfield Fair Grandstand. Local church offers event on Sept. 20 and 21
Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, will host a Treasure in a Trunk event on Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Those looking to participate through selling their items should call Ruth Allen at 330-550-3022. Reservation costs $10 per person, per site or table. The deadline is Sept. 1.
Knitting guild to have Aug. 13 meeting
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. This month’s planned program is a mosaic knit hat. For pattern instructions, refer to the Western Reserve Knitting Guild’s Cable Gram or Ravelry page. All unsold tickets, sold ticket stubs and collected money for the sale of the afghan raffle are due at this meeting. The winner of the afghan will be drawn at this time (the winner need not be present). Dues of $20 are due this time to be included in the WRKG directory. Gathering Place to have Aug. 12 meeting
Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will offer a Gathering Place event on Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. Angels for Animals will talk about their organization, introduce some of their animals and explain how you can become a volunteer.
In addition, Buckeye Hospice will have a nurse available to provide free blood pressure readings. Lunch is provided by the Woodlands. This is a free social outreach program offered to all senior citizens on the second Monday of the month, every month. Different games and activities are offered each month. Weekly square dance lessons to begin Sept. 10
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 from 7-8 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building.
Mill Creek ABWA to have Aug. 13 meeting
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, tossed salad, fresh fruit, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. The speaker for the evening will be Kelly Kotel, who is the Adult Program Specialist with the library. The scholarship recipients will also be present at this August meeting. The public is welcome.
Hopewell Theatre hopes to raise funds with fun
Hopewell Theatre’s 2019–2020 season kickoff “Fun” Raiser, an evening of food, fun, and prizes, will take place on Aug. 25 from 6-9 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Tickets cost $30 and include a full dinner buffet, dessert, cash wine bar, entertainment and silent auction prizes. Local favorites Glenn Stevens and Regina Reynolds will emcee a terrific entertainment lineup - Just Friends Community Chorus will perform favorite hits of the 1950s, Tom Gent and Maureen Gorman Stenglein will sing classic show tunes, and stand-up comedian Jenna Cintavey and improvisational comedy troupe The Dinner Theatre Rejects will bring the laughs. Microsoft Excel class 2

FamilySearch is an incredible research tool, with records from all U.S. states and many countries around the world. Use of this resource requires free registration, whereby each researcher sets up their own account. FamilySearch has a wiki that serves as on online genealogy encyclopedia, offering articles and audiovisual tutorials. Did you know that this resource provides free death certificates for Ohio deaths occurring 1908-1953? This event, which will take place every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Gotta Move story time
This event, which will take place on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Tales to tails
Read to our favorite therapy dogs on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for school-age children.
An afternoon in the viking age
When people hear the word “viking,” very specific images come to mind. When these diverse groups of people went a-viking (adventuring) there was much more involved than horned helmets, long beards and pillaging. Line dancing is a fun, exciting way to dance your way to good health. YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.
Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks
The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, recently began its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. - “How should we speak to one another;” Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
