Scrappers rally, but lose to Black Bears in 10th

NILES

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rallied from a six-run deficit after six innings to tie the West Virginia Black Bears at 9, but lost 11-9 in 10 innings Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers fell to 22-29 in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League. The Black Bears moved to 26-23.

West Virginia led 9-3 after six innings, thanks in large part to a six-run fourth that wiped out a 1-0 Mahoning Valley lead.

The Scrappers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, but the Black Bears added three runs in the top of the sixth.

Mahoning Valley began its comeback with a run in the seventh and then added two more in the eighth. The Scrappers then forced extra winnings when Julian Escobedo delivered a two-run single and Joab Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly.

But the Black Bears scored twice in the top of the 10th on RBI singles by Brendt Citta and Cory Wood, sandwiched around an error.

Wood had three hits and two RBIs. Escobedo and Bryan Lavastida each had two hits and two RBIs for the Scrappers.

Cameron Junker (4-0), the last of six West Virginia pitchers, struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th after blowing a save in the ninth.

Jerson Ramirez (0-1) took the loss.

Bengals donating to Dayton victims

CINCINNATI

The Bengals and NFL Foundation are donating $75,000 to help those directly affected by a shooting rampage in Dayton, Ohio that left 10 people dead.

The donation to The Dayton Foundation will go to a fund for the wounded and the families of those killed in the city’s popular Oregon District early Sunday. The shooting occurred a few hours after 22 people were killed in a shooting in El Paso, Texas.

The Bengals made the hour-long drive to Dayton last month and held their first training camp practice there as part of the NFL’s celebration of its 100th season. The league considers a game played in Dayton in 1920 as its first.

Jesus suspended for bad behavior

SAO PAULO

Striker Gabriel Jesus has been suspended from international matches with Brazil for two months because of bad behavior in the latest Copa America final.

The governing body of South American soccer, CONMEBOL, also announced Wednesday that it fined the 22-year-old Jesus $30,000 for actions it considers insulting and defamatory during Brazil’s 3-1 win over Peru in the July 7 decider.

Jesus was sent off after a second yellow card at the 70-minute mark in the South American cup final.

Brazil and Jesus can still appeal the decision.
