Tim Ryan supporting Dayton, takes break from campaign trail

YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, is taking a couple days off the campaign trail to be in Dayton, where a gunman killed nine people and injured at least 27 others.

Ryan of Howland, D-13th, said he canceled campaign events to provide support to the people of Dayton.

He was in that city Sunday night for a vigil and plans to stay there until Tuesday or Wednesday.

He said: “People are heartbroken and enraged. And when tragedies happen it’s important for leaders to show up. I’m here to grieve and let everyone know that we will mobilize to bring the change to America that people are demanding.”

On Sunday, he called for Congress to reconvene “to take up a package of legislation meant to stop these acts of horror and other acts of gun violence that affect every single American.”

Ryan said he will resume his campaign after leaving Dayton.
