Members of the Mahoning Valley Ulster Project performed a talent show for residents of Poland Sunrise on July 17.
According to Kymberlie Stutz, the Ulster Project is a leadership organization for local teenagers to connect with teens from Northern Ireland.
“It’s all about teaching peace and tolerance,” Stutz said. “We do a range of volunteer work over the summer.”
Stutz said this is the first year the group has worked with Poland Sunrise, however.
“My dad stayed here for a period of time so I know what an amazing place it is,” Stutz said.
She said it was because of this personal experience and her involvement in the Ulster Project that made her want to connect the two.
“The teenagers already do a talent show for themselves that they have worked on for a while,” she said.
Instead of just performing for the group, Stutz said the teenagers decided to perform for the residents at Sunrise.
During the show, the Irish teenagers and American teenagers broke into groups.
The American teens kicked off the event by performing their own version of the evolution of dance. Teenagers from Northers Ireland then performed a skit for the residents.
Poland Sunrise provided prizes for all of the teenagers at the end of the performance.
“We are very happy to have them here,” said Kitty Leonelli, Activities Coordinator at Poland Sunrise.
Leonelli said that she hopes this year will spark an ongoing relationship between the two groups.
The Ulster Project students also visited the center earlier this year during the annual Fourth of July party.
