OSU women’s hoops assistant coach resigns
COLUMBUS
Ohio State says an assistant women’s basketball coach has resigned amid an investigation into NCAA rules violations.
In his resignation letter dated Friday, associate head coach Patrick Klein said, “I’ve been made aware that in some instances, my communications with some student-athletes may have been too informal or in some cases even inappropriate.”
Neither Klein nor the university disclosed the specifics. He apologized in the letter, saying he “should have used better judgment.”
Ohio State said the NCAA has been notified and the investigation is continuing.
Klein spent eight seasons on the team’s staff and was promoted to associate head coach before the 2016-17 season.
Liberati named BW captain for 2nd season
BEREA
The Baldwin Wallace University football team has selected five student-athletes to serve as team captains for the 2019 season.
Junior linebacker and Lisbon graduate Josh Liberati was named one of the team leaders for the second consecutive season. Liberati will join senior linebacker Noah Jackson, senior defensive back Jordyn Johnson, senior quarterback A.J. Miller and junior offensive lineman Patrick Simon as captains this season.
To become a captain, student-athletes had to send in an application to third-year head coach Jim Hilvert and were then voted on by their teammates.
The only returning captain, Liberati appeared in all ten games last year. He led the team with a career-high 59 tackles, including a career-best of 51/2 for loss. He also recorded a career-high three sacks.
Mr. Money wins West Virginia Derby crown
Chester, W.Va.
Allied Racing Stable’s Mr. Money left little doubt he’s headed up the ladder with a handy six-length victory in the $500,000, Grade III West Virginia Derby for 3-year-olds Saturday at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort.
Mr. Money, a colt by Goldencents out of the Tiznow mare Plenty O’Toole, entered Mountaineer’s signature race with three consecutive Grade III wins — the Pat Day Mile and Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand, which he won by a combined 141/4 lengths with Gabriel Saez aboard.
Tom Durant’s Silver Dust finished with a victory in the $200,000, Grade III West Virginia Governor’s Cup at 11/16 miles.
Ridden by Jack Gilligan — his only mount of the day — Silver Dust sat just behind the dueling pair of Exclamation Point and Kukulkan through moderate fractions, took over three-wide entering the stretch.
