Boardman tops Cambridge to reach Sunday’s state final

CAMBRIDGE

Anthony Groner pitched a five-hitter as Boardman beat host Cambridge to reach Sunday’s state final.

Groner also went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs.

The score was tied at 3 in the fifth when Gabe Hammerton hit a one-out double to left field. Ryan Smith followed with an RBI double and Groner delivered a run-scoring single.

Chris Vass, Dom Gordon and and Ryan Mitchell also had hits for Boardman, which will play a team to be determined in the state final at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Canfield-Poland falls in semifinals

KIRKLAND, WASH.

Canfield-Poland’s Junior League softball team is out of Junior League Softball World Series title contention following a 4-3 loss to the Texas-based Columbus Little League.

Columbus scored four runs in the third inning. Canfield-Poland scored two in the sixth to come within a run of tying the game.

Layni Bednar had two RBIs and Alaina Scavina had two hits. Mia Opalik struck out seven in defeat.

Canfield-Poland will play the Philippines’ Bulacan Little League today in a consolation game.
