The National Day of Prayer, with the theme, “Love One Another,” will be observed from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in front of the Huntington Bank building, 23 Federal Plaza E. There will be a tent, chairs and music.

Barbecue fundraiser set for Wednesday

The Yankee Lake Ballroom, 1814 state Route 7, will be the site for the 30th annual Strimbu Memorial Barbecue fundraiser that will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Proceeds benefit the Strimbu Memorial Fund, which will award scholarships to qualified high school seniors in 12 local school districts. The event is sponsored by First National Bank and Steel Dynamics.

Dinner will be served at 9 and will consist of blackened catfish, barbecued ribs, roast leg of lamb, pork loin and more. Entertainment will feature Chris Higbee and Charlie Daniels. There also will be silent and live auctions.

Garden club to host flower show and dinner

CANFIELD

St. Michael Garden Club will host its annual flower show and dinner at 6 p.m. May 15 in the church hall, 300 Broad St., . The theme will be Group Table Scape and small groups will create table settings and centerpieces with themes of choice.

Members are asked to take their own table service. Reservations must be made by Monday, by sending a check for $22 to Jeri Bertison, 9264 Sharrott Road No. 1603, Poland, OH 44514. Hostesses will be the executive committee.

Wine taste fundraiser

Handel’s Neighborhood Association will host its wine taste fundtaiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St. Tickets are $15, which includes appetizers. The event will feature a basket and 50-50 raffle. Event organizers are seeking gift baskets or gift card donations as well as cash donations for the neighborhood beautification project. Light-up Salem event

Salem Preservation, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is bringing a series of informative and educational programs to the community this summer. The first free event, which is being held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ruth Smucker House, 271 South Broadway Ave., will show residents how to beautify their homes, landscapes and decks with affordable decorative lighting. Edison Lighting will showcase several examples of do-it -yourself lightingscapes. Edison Lighting’s president and owner Ed Wojciechowski will demonstrate ways to illuminate property. There will be door prizes, discounts and light refreshments following the program with a meet and greet with Wojciechowski. Edison Lighting also is available for professional lighting installation. Tournament will take place Saturday

A community basketball tournament will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Cost is free for 18 and younger and $8 per player for adults. Doors open at 9 and tournaments will continue on the first Saturday of each month, unless notified. Refreshments will be available for purchase and there will be a 50-50 raffle.
