Gators held scoreless in losing doubleheader
AUSTINTOWN
The Eastern Gateway Community College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Mercyhurst North East for the second straight day Sunday at Austintown Fitch’s Rich Coppola Field.
Mercyhurst North East (22-15, 12-8 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference) won 4-0 and 6-0.
The Gators (15-18, 9-13) had just four singles by Doug Painter, Evan Knaus, Grant Williams and Nick Benson in the opener.
EGCC’s Bene Pomales had an infield single for the Gators’ lone hit in the nightcap.
EGCC will visit Lorain Community College at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
MLB: Dodgers finish off sweep of Pirates

Max Muncy singled home the tying run in the fifth inning and the go-ahead run in the seventh, boosting the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 Sunday for a three-game sweep.
Rich Hill made his season debut after recovering from a sprained right knee and allowed five runs — just one earned — and five hits in six innings. Hill struck out six, walked none and retired his last 13 batters as the Dodgers rallied from a 5-1 deficit.
Cody Bellinger hit his 14th homer for Los Angeles.
NBA: Durant scores 35 points as Warriors win
OAKLAND, Calif.
Kevin Durant scored 35 points in outdueling James Harden and the Golden State Warriors held off the Houston Rockets 104-100 on Sunday in the opener of a Western Conference semifinal.
Harden scored 35 points and Eric Gordon 27 for the Rockets.
NBA: Irving, Horford lead Celtics past Bucks
MILWAUKEE
Kyrie Irving had 26 points and 11 assists, Al Horford added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Boston Celtics cruised past the Milwaukee Bucks 112-90 on Sunday in the opener of their second-round playoff series.
Jaylen Brown chipped in with 19 points and Gordon Hayward had 13 for the Celtics. Boston played stingy defense against MVP candidate Giannis Antetokoumpo, who scored 22 points but shot just 7 for 21.
NHL: Hurricanes rally for 2-0 series lead
NEW YORK
Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter scored 48 seconds apart early in the third period to rally the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday and a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Petr Mrazek stopped nine of 10 shots he faced before leaving with an injury 61/2 minutes into the second period. Curtis McElhinney came on and finished with 17 saves.
Thiem tops Medvedev in Barcelona Open final
BARCELONA, Spain
Dominic Thiem capped an impressive week to win the Barcelona Open on Sunday, securing his second title of the year.
The Austrian beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 Sunday, a day after he was dominant against Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.
Langdon races to first Funny Car victory
CONCORD, N.C.
Shawn Langdon won the Funny Car title in the NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on Sunday to become the second driver to win in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories at zMAX Dragway and the 17th in NHRA history with wins in both categories.
Langdon, a 14-time winner in Top Fuel and a former season champion, won in his 30th Funny Car start. He had a run of 4.125-seconds at 305.08 mph in the final in a Toyota Camry.
Steve Torrence won in Top Fuel, and Andrew Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Defending season champion Torrence raced to his first victory of the season and third in a row in the event with a 3.778 at 323.19.
Hines became the first Pro Stock Motorcycle rider to reach 50 victories with a 6.831 run at 198.17.
