Driving school to host ‘arrive alive’ class

Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School, hosted by Mahoning Valley Region SCCA, will take place at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tire Rack Street Survival is the largest active nonprofit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel.

Tire Rack Street Survival is open to licensed and permitted drivers age 15 to 21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org. Cost is $95 per student, and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates.

Goodyear blimp program scheduled

A representative from the Goodyear Company will present a program about blimps at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St. From the building of the first Goodyear blimp in the early 1900’s to present day, blimps have played an important role in American history. Open to the public and free to attend. Celebration of Scouting breakfast

Whispering Pines District Great Trail Council Boy Scouts of America will host its 14th annual Celebration of Scouting breakfast fundraiser Tuesday at Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave.

The event will recognize the impact that the program has on young people throughout Mahoning County. Keynote speaker will be Frank LaRose, the Ohio Secretary of State and Eagle Scout, and Mark Luke will serve as master of ceremonies. Doors open at 7 a.m.; breakfast will be served at 7:15 and the program begins at 7:45.

Library to offer interview skills classes

Technology instructor Stephanie Peterson will present the program “The Interview” at Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The program is designed to target the improvement of job search skills. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop computer or tablet in order to save classroom work if possible, as the number of library devices may be limited.

The class is provided through a Guiding Ohio Online grant made by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the State Library of Ohio.

Canfield announces scholarship winner

Dominic DeRamo, a senior at Canfield High School, recently was awarded the Franklin B. Walter Scholarship in Mahoning County. The scholarship is awarded to one high-school senior from each county in Ohio who has shown academic achievement through grades, test scores, involvement in activities and awards. DeRamo is a member of the National Honor Society, the speech and debate team, participates in Model United Nations, is a student council officer, a senior class officer and a peer counselor.

‘Get Smart’ program to discuss eBay

The Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host its Get Smart program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Quaker room. Kathy Bennett will discuss the workings of eBay and teach how to begin selling, what to sell, and how much it costs to sell items. Also discussed will be how to buy and track orders on purchases made on eBay.

Fishing league to host competition

BELOIT

The Student Fishing League is a competitive bass fishing group for high school and college student anglers founded in 2013 by Harry Emmerling.

The group meets each month to update student participants about upcoming tournaments and fishing outings. The league participates in three tournaments a year to qualify for the state event.

Garrett Dean, a sophomore at West Branch High School, has been fishing with his father since he was 5 years old and is now part of the SFL. The SFL takes boat trips on weekends to give students an opportunity to spend time doing community service projects and more practice honing skills as student anglers.

West Side Cats needs volunteers
