Blue Jays 4, Athletics 2

TORONTO

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. capped his major league debut with a double leading off the ninth inning for his first hit, and Brandon Drury followed with a winning two-run homer with two outs to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the Oakland Athletics. Guerrero grounded out in the second, was robbed of an extra-base hit by left fielder Stephen Pinder’s leaping catch in the fourth, then flied out to right in the sixth.

Twins 6, Orioles 1

MINNEAPOLIS

Nelson Cruz hit two of the Minnesota Twins’ five home runs off Baltimore in a win over the Orioles. Cruz, Eddie Rosario and C.J. Cron hit consecutive home runs in the first inning off Alex Cobb (0-2), with Cruz and Rosario connecting on back-to-back pitches. Max Kepler homered off Cobb in the fourth, and Cruz homered against Gabriel Ynoa in the fifth. Martin Perez (3-0) gave up one run and six hits in six innings. Trey Mancini had three hits for Baltimore.

Angels 5, Royals 1

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the first inning and moved passed Lou Gehrig into fourth place on the career RBI list, and Tyler Skaggs pitched five shutout innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals. Skaggs (2-2) continued to baffle the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The left-hander didn’t allow a run in five innings plus one batter. The Royals nearly got to Skaggs in the fourth. With two outs, Alex Gordon and Hunter Dozier singled and Jorge Soler drew a walk. But Skaggs got Ryan O’Hearn to swing at a 3-2 fastball. The Royals got a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Adalberto Mondesi.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Padres 4, Nationals 3

WASHINGTON

Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking solo drive in the ninth inning, and the San Diego Padres rallied to beat the Washington Nationals. Renfroe, who entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning, drove Sean Doolittle’s 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center for his fifth homer. It was only the second run allowed by Doolittle (3-1) in 12 appearances. Craig Stammen (3-1) got the win despite allowing Carter Kieboom’s solo homer in his major league debut. Kirby Yates worked the ninth for his major league-best 13th save.

Rockies 8, Braves 4

ATLANTA

Nolan Arenado combined with Trevor Story to homer on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning, then hit a tiebreaking double in the sixth that led the Colorado Rockies over the Atlanta Braves. Daniel Murphy went 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Rockies, who had seven extra-base hits. Tyler Flowers homered twice for the Braves, who have lost three of four. Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela (2-1) gave up three runs, seven hits and three walks in 52/3 innings. Wade Davis struck out Freddie Freeman, his only batter, to strand two runners on and earn his fourth save in four chances.

Reds 12, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS

Joey Votto, Yasiel Puig and Eugenio Suarez homered, and the Cincinnati Reds snapped St. Louis’ five-game win streak with a victory over the Cardinals. Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker also connected as the Reds matched a season high with five homers in their third win in four games. Anthony DeSclafani tossed six scoreless innings in his first win since Aug. 28. Matt Carpenter had two hits and walked twice for St. Louis, which finished with eight hits. Carpenter scored on Paul DeJong’s single in the eighth for the Cardinals’ only run. DeSclafani (1-1) gave up four hits in a 91-pitch outing. He struck out six and walked three.

Phillies 4, Marlins 0

PHILADELPHIA

Jerad Eickhoff pitched seven crisp innings, Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins. J.T. Realmuto and Maikel Franco also went deep for the Phillies, who won for just the third time in their last nine games. Jorge Alfaro had two of Miami’s five hits. The Marlins, who began the day in a tie with Kansas City for the worst record in the majors, dropped to 8-18. Harper broke the game open with a drive off the second deck in right in the eighth. The slugger was mired in a 2-for-22 drought before launching Tyler Kinley’s 88-mph slider 400 feet for his sixth homer. Eickhoff (1-1) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one.
