The Austintown library hosted a Build a Birdhouse event on April 17.

Librarian Amelia Dale organized the event, which she hosted both at the Austintown library and the Michael Kusalaba library.

“We like to do a make your own event for each season,” Dale said. “This is my way to celebrate spring.”

Dale used three different types of birdhouse kits for community members to construct their bird houses. All supplies were provided by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

To kick off the event Dale showed community members how to use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the birdhouse pieces. After smoothing them down community members connected the pieces, using quick dry glue to put them together.

Children and their families were then able to paint and decorate the bird houses.

“These are not necessarily for outdoor use,” Dale said. “They are more decorative.”

Dale did say that if community members wanted to use them outdoors they would have to be covered in a clear coating of Modge Podge or something similar. For more upcoming library events, go to www.libraryvisit.org.
