Newcomers to meet throughout May
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley book club will meet on May 2, and will be talking about “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng. Needlework will meet on May 14, and movie group will meet on May 22. Roundtowners and birthday group activity dates will be decided at the meeting, and a few minutes will be taken to honor the memory of one of our members, Barb Huberty. Next month’s luncheon will be on May 22, during which officers for next year will be installed. Newcomers was formed more than 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. American Business Women’s Association to meet May 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its May 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include creamed chicken over biscuit, stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. Election of new officers will take place at this May meeting. The public is welcome.
Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Library closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 12 and May 26-27.
Lupochovsky awarded scholarship
An area high school senior was awarded scholarship money at the 25th annual YWCA Mahoning Valley Young Women with Bright Futures Awards program on April 6 at the Holiday Inn in Boardman. Galena Lupochovsky, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, took home the second-place $8,000 scholarship. She intends to enroll in Youngstown State University’s BaccMed Program and focus on biochemistry.
YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 24-26, at Youngstown Business Incubator, located at 29 Vindicator Square in Youngstown. Retired teachers association to have May 8 meeting
Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on May 8 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m., with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The program will include the annual “In- Memoriam” by Sally Winsen, “In-Remembrance” by Martha Lopez and the recognition of all 90-year and older members by Peggy Bennett. Entertainment will be provided by the Struthers choir. The community service collection will aid the Down Syndrome Association of Mahoning Valley. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet lunch, which includes herb-baked chicken, pasta, redskin potatoes, broccoli, tossed salad and strawberry dessert, will be served. Friendly Squares May square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Kindergarten readiness stations
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Poland branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Trim a tree
Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons trees during Poland library hours for the month of May. This program is for children of all ages.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in May for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. For caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months.

Visit the Poland library at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday in May for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult to this one hour program.
Friends of PLYMC yoga
Join the Friends of PLYMC for yoga class from 5-6 p.m. p.m. every Wednesday in May at the Poland library. Class is $10 a session and attendees can pay as they attend. Attendees should dress comfortably. This program is for adults.

The Friends of Poland Library will hold a pot luck brunch at 10 a.m. on May 7. The Poland High School a cappella choir will perform.
Communication controversy in deaf education
Visit the Poland library at 11 a.m. on May 10, to learn about the history of deaf education. Deaf children were thought to be incapable of speech and reasoning until new discoveries were made in Europe in the 16th century. The historic debate between two great education pioneers over sign language and oralism rocked Europe and the U.S. at the 1880 Milan Conference and this 135-year old unresolved issue caused a bitter division among educators and impacted education of deaf children. This program is for adults and teens.
Appy hour
Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. on May 11, to learn about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a new recipe or find music to listen to on your walk. American Sign Language Club
Visit the Poland library at 6 p.m. on May 16, to learn about American Sign Language. During meetings, we practice and learn the various aspects of the language and culture of the deaf/hard of hearing. Our goal is to bring awareness of and instill the love of ASL. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience. Refreshments will be provided. This program is for the family.
Blood pressure screening
Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will hold a blood pressure screening at the Poland library from 10:15-11:15 a.m. on May 17.
No need to knead
Visit the Poland library at 6 p.m. on May 20, to learn how to make homemade bread without kneading. Sample a finished loaf, and take home a batch of dough to bake at home. Ingredients will be provided, but bring your own mixing bowl and mixing spoon. A food waiver must be signed. Space is limited and registration is recommended. This program is for adults and teens.
Read to Roxie
Visit the Poland library to relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Go Team Therapy Dogs at 6 p.m. on May 21. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Historical society to host day trip
The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Caf , followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser
There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Money is not refundable but the ticket can be transferred to another person. A valid photo ID is required. TeenXTreme blackout poetry contest
April is National Poetry Month, so indulge in some ‘creative destruction’ and express your inner poet during Poland library hours. Create a poem by eliminating - blacking out - the words you don’t want from newspaper and magazine articles (or book pages) which are provided. Three winners will be chosen from entries throughout the county and awarded cash prizes. Contact a librarian for details. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.

YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3
The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Classmates interested in helping with the reunion are invited to attend the meeting. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
