Students in Poland’s new Family Consumer Science Class put their kitchen skills to the test.
The new class is taught by Korisa Walton, who taught students about kitchen safety as they worked together to make English muffin pizza.
“We were able to add more course offerings this year to grades five and six due to the realignment of the buildings under one complex,” said McKinley Associate Principal Lisa Iberis. “The hope was to offer more hands-on, real world experiences for students at younger ages.”
During the project students worked in teams, taking on different jobs while cooking the pizza.
“Students love the opportunity to explore family consumer science,” Iberis said.
After baking the pizza students each got to enjoy a piece.
Walton said that the class was offered this year to 127 fifth-graders at McKinley.
“The students take the course for seven weeks and rotate through five exploratory courses during the school year,” Walton said.
During the course, students study foods, including kitchen and food safety, string art, including basic hand sewing, time management, budgeting and more.
