East’s Jason Ray to lead Mahoning All-Stars

YOUNGSTOWN

East High baseball coach Jason Ray has been selected the Mahoning County coach for the seventh High School Valley All-Star Classic.

The game, in which the best senior baseball players from Mahoning County face the best of Trumbull County’s baseball players, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on June 7 at Eastwood Field.

Michael Rohn, East Golden Bears assistant baseball coach, also will be on the coaching staff for the Mahoning County team.

The game is sponsored by Baird Brothers and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Poland to host middle school county meet

POLAND

The Poland Seminary High School Athletic Department will host the 106th Middle School County Track and Field Championships on Monday at Poland Stadium. Field events will start at 4:30 p.m., with running events to follow at 5.

Adult tickets are $5 each. The cost for student is $3. No passes will be accepted at the gate.

Amateur MMA event at Yankee Lake Ballroom

BROOKFIELD

An 11-fight amateur mixed martial arts event – the 52nd such event promoted by Chuck Haskell and Steel Valley Promotions since 2007 – is set for Saturday at Yankee Lake Ballroom. The event features two undefeated fighters at 155 pounds: Darren Williams (3-0) of Pittsburgh taking on Quincey McCombs (3-0) of Ellwood City in a lightweight title elimination bout.

The winner will fight July 13 for the title sanctioned by the Ohio Athletic Commission. The event also will be at Yankee Lake.

Two other undefeated light heavyweight fighters will also be squaring off in the co-main event, where Scott Sentner (1-0) of Cortland is set to meet Tavon Price (1-0) of Pittsburgh.

Gates open at 6 p.m., with fights set to begin at 7:30. The event, sanctioned by the Ohio Athletic Commission, is open to all ages at the discretion of parents.

Pre-sale tickets are $25. The cost is $30 at the door.

Phantoms land three in Dispersal Draft

Youngstown

The Youngstown Phantoms acquired the USHL playing rights to three players through the 2019 Central Illinois Flying Aces Dispersal Draft on Monday morning.

The Phantoms acquired forwards Bradley Marek, Robbie Griffin and Tomas Vochazka.

The Dispersal Draft was held due to the Central Illinois Flying Aces not returning to the USHL for the 2019-2020 season. All age eligible returning USHL players and Affiliate players for the Flying Aces were available to be selected by USHL clubs.

Marek, who completed his second season with the Flying Aces and put up 11 goals and 18 points in 62 games this past season in the USHL. The Big Rapids, Mich., native is committed to Michigan State.

Griffin played the last two seasons in the NCDC league with the Boston Jr. Bruins and won the NCDC Championship last month. In 50 games, Griffin put up eight goals and 42 points. Griffin is committed to Northeastern University and hails from Burlington, Mass.

Vochazka, from the Czech Republic, played for the Flying Aces this season and also for the NAHL’s Chippewa Steel.

Jaguars pick up option on cornerback Ramsey

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have exercised the fifth-year option in cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s rookie contract.

The team made the announcement Thursday, about five hours before the start of the NFL draft.

The two-time Pro Bowl defender is now under contract through 2020. Unless he signs a long-term deal before then, Ramsey will earn about $10 million in 2020 — the average salary of the 10 highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL.

Ramsey, the fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft, has 193 tackles, 44 pass breakups and nine interceptions in 48 games.
