Kitchen memories lecture

The Canfield Historical Society will present an interactive showcase and lecture on May 2 at 7 p.m., titled Kitchen Memories. Canfield Historical Society Curator Laura Zeh-Vazquez will showcase the societies collection of vintage kitchen utensils and culinary antiques. The lecture will discuss how American kitchens have evolved through different eras, and will highlight the “helpful” tools of the housewife. This free lecture takes place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season on April 28 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are April 28 at 2 p.m. - “What is compassion?” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk; May 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Compassion for yourself;” June 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “The gift of empathy;” July 18 at 6:30 p.m. - “Mindfulness – how little we know;” Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. - “How should we speak to one another;” Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. Local church hosts annual event

Canfield Presbyterian Church will be hosting its annual Trash and Treasure Sale on May 4 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admittance to the sale is free and open to the public - it will feature slightly-used and reasonably-priced furniture, household goods, books, toys, baby items, electronics and sporting equipment, as well as jewelry, collectibles and antiques. All proceeds will benefit the church’s missions. The church is located at 140 W. Main St. in Canfield.

Newcomers to meet throughout May

The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley book club will meet on May 2, and will be talking about “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng. Needlework will meet on May 14, and movie group will meet on May 22. Roundtowners and birthday group activity dates will be decided at the meeting, and a few minutes will be taken to honor the memory of one of our members, Barb Huberty. Next month’s luncheon will be on May 22, during which officers for next year will be installed. Newcomers was formed more than 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 12 and May 26-27.

Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Canfield branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.

American Business Women’s Association to meet May 14

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its May 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include creamed chicken over biscuit, stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. Election of new officers will take place at this May meeting. The public is welcome.

Summer Discovery Program

Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in May for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta move story time

Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in May for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and kids may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver.

Learn to line dance

Dance your way to good health at the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on May 1. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. Byrne will highlight what barriers you might face in returning to college, look at alternative and post-traditional college tracks and offer solutions that are right for you and your busy life. Using MyHeritage for your heritage

MyHeritage is one of the largest, most internationally diverse genealogy databases of its kind in the world. It includes billions of historical documents from more than 48 countries, millions of historical photos, public records, indexes and additional resources. Bring a book of your choice or they will find one for you. This program is for children grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.

Spring tea fundraiser

The Friends of the Library Canfield Committee will host a Spring Tea featuring James McClellan, vocalist, and Tyler Guerrieri, guitarist. They will present “Two on a Song,” a selection of pop, standards and show tunes. The tea will begin at 2 p.m. on May 19, at the Canfield library; doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds are used to benefit children’s programming at the library. Tea sandwiches and sweets will be served with the tea, catered by A La Cart. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50. Tickets are $30 per person. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps

Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 24-26, at Youngstown Business Incubator, located at 29 Vindicator Square in Youngstown. Retired teachers association to have May 8 meeting

Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet May 8 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m., with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The program will include the annual “In- Memoriam” by Sally Winsen, “In-Remembrance” by Martha Lopez and the recognition of all 90-year and older members by Peggy Bennett. Entertainment will be provided by the Struthers choir. The community service collection will aid the Down Syndrome Association of Mahoning Valley. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet lunch, which includes herb-baked chicken, pasta, redskin potatoes, broccoli, tossed salad and strawberry dessert, will be served. Friendly Squares May square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8

The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser

There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Money is not refundable but the ticket can be transferred to another person. A valid photo ID is required. TeenXTreme blackout poetry contest

April is National Poetry Month, so indulge in some ‘creative destruction’ and express your inner poet during Canfield library hours. Create a poem by eliminating - blacking out - the words you don’t want from newspaper and magazine articles (or book pages) which are provided. Three winners will be chosen from entries throughout the county and awarded cash prizes. Contact a librarian for details. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.

YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
