Newcomers to meet throughout May
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley book club will meet on May 2, and will be talking about “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng. Needlework will meet on May 14, and movie group will meet on May 22. Roundtowners and birthday group activity dates will be decided at the meeting, and a few minutes will be taken to honor the memory of one of our members, Barb Huberty. Next month’s luncheon will be on May 22, during which officers for next year will be installed. Newcomers was formed more than 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. American Business Women’s Association to meet May 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its May 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include creamed chicken over biscuit, stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Library closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 12 and May 26-27.
Boardman Historical Society offers discussion
Mark Luke will present “The History of Memorial Day” on May 11 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The event is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. For information, contact Deborah Liptak at 330-740-6086. The lecture will discuss what Memorial Day is, who started it and when. Luke, a graduate of Boardman High School and longtime resident of the township, is the director of the Mahoning Valley Mediation Services. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Visitors, new members and guests are welcome.
Kindergarten readiness
The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Boardman branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.
Bonding with babies and books
Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in May for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.
Teen Advisory Board
Visit the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. on May 1, to help plan and support teen activities at the library, meet new people and have fun. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.
The five W’s of marketing
Visit the Boardman library from 3:30- 5 p.m. on May 4, to join the Business and Investment Center as we introduce the who, what, when, where and why of marketing your business. This program will allow you to familiarize yourself with the tools that will help you become more confident in discussing your industry, competitors and customers. The featured databases (DemographicsNow- Library Edition, ReferenceUSA’s U.S. Consumers/Lifestyles) bring timely and authoritative data and insights for your marketing plan. Other sources, including American FactFinder and trade associations for statistics, will also be discussed. They will also look at the relationship between marketing, advertising and branding. Local church hosts spring event
Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market St., will host a spring Trash and Treasure sale fundraiser on May 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday will be $2 bag day.

Bring up to six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles to the Boardman library and trade with others at 4 p.m. on May 8.
Pop-up library
Visit the pop-up library from 1-4 p.m. on May 4, at Kids Day at the Davis Family YMCA, located at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The pop-up library goes out into the community to provide library materials, offer sign ups for a library card and share information about digital resources and branch services. Apprentice’s Inn

Retired teachers association to have May 8 meeting
Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet May 8 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m., with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The program will include the annual “In- Memoriam” by Sally Winsen, “In-Remembrance” by Martha Lopez and the recognition of all 90-year and older members by Peggy Bennett. Entertainment will be provided by the Struthers choir. The community service collection will aid the Down Syndrome Association of Mahoning Valley. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet lunch, which includes herb-baked chicken, pasta, redskin potatoes, broccoli, tossed salad and strawberry dessert, will be served. Friendly Squares May square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Oral history and the conveyance of experience
Visit the Boardman library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 30, to learn about oral history. Oral history is a first-person narrative that preserves a portrait of experiences and interpretations of events. Oral accounts provide eyewitness testimony, offering a richer description of the past, to teach us what has changed and what has stayed the same. Historical documents alone do not provide a full spectrum of knowledge.Oral history is the place to discover personal stories and truths that have been untold or forgotten. During this program,oral history resources will be examined and the best practices for conducting effective interviews will be discussed. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. Akron Children’s to honor Hirschbecks
Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will honor John and Denise Hirschbeck and family as the 2019 Champion for Our Valley’s Children at the ninth annual celebration dinner on May 7, at The Lake Club in Poland. Each holiday season, the Hirschbecks personally deliver wish list items to families of Akron Children’s patients with complicated, serious or life-threatening health conditions through the Magic of Michael Foundation. The organization was formed in memory of the Hirschbeck’s son Michael, who passed away in 2014, from complications of adrenoleukodystrophy, a genetic brain disease. The Champions for Our Valley’s Children event will highlight the hospital’s progress in the Mahoning Valley and will recognize those who have helped to make it possible, including donors, volunteers, staff and community partners. Three additional individuals and organizations will receive the Children’s Advocate Award, including Julie Costas, Janelle Nagy of Piggyback Foundation of Youngstown and Dr. Sergul Erzurum and Karen Segesto of Sight For All United. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8
The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser
There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others. These skills are part of the social emotional domain of early learning. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
