YWCA to host anti-racism events
YOUNGSTOWN
YWCA Mahoning Valley invites the community to its A Stand Against Racism events. This year’s theme, “No Hate, No Fear,” encourages participants to explore the ways in which immigration policies are harming communities of color and the fabric of society as a whole. YWCA Mahoning Valley will present two opportunities to engage, support and take a stand. The first event, “Life After Deportation: A Panel Discussion,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at YWCA Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave. Panelists include former state Sen. Joe Schiavoni; Lina Adi, daughter of downtown Youngstown business owner Al Adi, who was deported in early 2018; and Pastor Hery Salamanca, a member of the Salem community who worked with families in the wake of ICE raids on FreshMark’s Salem plant in August 2018. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Alicia Prieto Langarica, associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Youngstown State University. This event is co-sponsored by Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past and the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services at YSU. The second event, “Engaging to Support Immigrant Communities,” will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the YWCA’s Warren office, 375 N. Park Ave. YWCA will host Veronica Dahlberg of HOLA Ohio for training on how to be an ally to communities facing an immigration crisis. Both events are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For information, contact 330-746-6361, ext. 109.
