YWCA to host anti-racism events

YWCA Mahoning Valley invites the community to its A Stand Against Racism events. This year’s theme, “No Hate, No Fear,” encourages participants to explore the ways in which immigration policies are harming communities of color and the fabric of society as a whole. YWCA Mahoning Valley will present two opportunities to engage, support and take a stand. The first event, “Life After Deportation: A Panel Discussion,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at YWCA Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave. Panelists include former state Sen. Joe Schiavoni; Lina Adi, daughter of downtown Youngstown business owner Al Adi, who was deported in early 2018; and Pastor Hery Salamanca, a member of the Salem community who worked with families in the wake of ICE raids on FreshMark’s Salem plant in August 2018. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Alicia Prieto Langarica, associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Youngstown State University. This event is co-sponsored by Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past and the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services at YSU. The second event, “Engaging to Support Immigrant Communities,” will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the YWCA’s Warren office, 375 N. Park Ave. YWCA will host Veronica Dahlberg of HOLA Ohio for training on how to be an ally to communities facing an immigration crisis. Both events are free and open to the public. Authors seek input

Two Maine-based authors are crowdsourcing content for a book about women and retirement titled “Voices from the Other Side … of Retirement.” Co-authors Leslie Inman and Roxanne Jones are inviting retired women from all walks of life to add their voices to this book by going to www.retirementvoices.com and completing an online questionnaire. Submission deadline is Tuesday.

The book will be a guide for yet-to-retire women, with insights on what retirement is really like from women who have already left the working world. The primary content will be stories, quotes and advice about the challenges that this stage of life can pose. Women whose submissions are accepted will receive a free copy of the book. Comedy show benefit

Former sportscaster turned stand-up comic Bill Boronkay will headline a comedy show at 6 p.m. May 4 at Caf 422, 8586 South Ave., to benefit Man Up Mahoning Valley. Proceeds will support free prostate cancer screenings throughout the Mahoning Valley. Liz Blanc, a veteran of the Cleveland Comedy Festival and Chicago Women’s Comedy Festival, and writer, comic and trivia expert Greg Smrdel will join Boronkay. All three comics are known for their PG-rated acts. Tickets cost $30 per person and include a dinner buffet. A cash bar also will be available. The deadline to reserve tickets is Friday. Genealogy class to take place May 11

The Moss Ancestral Home, 1499 Burnett St., will host a Beginners Genealogy Class from 9 to 10:30 a.m. May 11. Mary Lou Moss Godleski, genealogist and owner of the home, will teach. The program will feature pedigree chart and family group sheets, the information found in the U.S. Census records, Social Security Death Index and other sources. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided and workbooks will be available for the first 10 people to register or call. Center to host stunt dog trials Saturday

The Canine Campus Training & Wellness Center, 6041 West Liberty St., will present the second annual Stunt Dog Indoor Trial from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Levels include: judging novice, open, proven, professional and stunt-dog champion. Participants must have the correlating “Do More With Your Dog” trick dog title prior to entering the stunt dog ring, which will be offered on site the day of the trial. Ring entry tickets can be purchased at www.domorewithyourdog.com. Hot lunches, pop and water will be available for a small fee. The event will have ample parking and crating space. Center announces Labyrinth Walks

The Ursuline Education & Wellness Center, 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk Season at 2 p.m. Sunday. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All people of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20 to 30 minutes. Other Labyrinth Walk dates include: May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 12, all at 6:30 p.m., and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible and offers parking. Printed guides are provided at the entrance offering suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
