YSU men finish third in Horizon tourney

The Youngstown State men’s golf team grabbed the lead at the midway point of the final round of Tuesday’s Horizon League Championships before finishing third.

In the women’s tournament, YSU junior Katlyn Shutt finished tied for second place to lead the Penguins to a fourth-place finish.

IUPUI won the championship for the second straight season with a 930 and finished 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Oakland. Cleveland State placed third with a team score of 952. The Penguins totaled 958.

MEN

The Penguins finished with a three-round total of 899 after carding a final round 296. YSU opened the tournament with a 305 on Sunday and shot a 298 on Monday.

Winning the event was Wright State which finished with a three-round score of 888. Northern Kentucky, the day one and day two leader dropped off the pace and finished second with a score of 896.

Sophomore Ken Keller led the way with a sixth-place finish, sophomore Zack Ford was ninth, Kevin Scherr and Cole Hughes tied for 20th and Jason McQuown was 27th.

WOMEN

Shutt finished the tournament with a three-round score of 228 (79-75-74), and tied for second place with IUPUI’s Marion DeBove.

Maddie Zack of Oakland finished one stroke better with a three-round 227 to earn medalist honors. Shutt was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team for the second time in her career. She also earned the distinction after winning medalist honors as a freshman in 2017.

YSU’s Puthita Khuanrudee placed 11th with a three-round total of 239.
