Christian Myers homered, tripled and doubled to drive in three runs for the Falcons (12-4, 6-1 All-American Conference Red Tier). Alarki Sierra and TJ Piroch each had two hits while Bobby Cavalier scored twice. Patrick Coleman tossed a four-hitter. For the Tigers, Frankie Manios and Joey Perfette doubled.

STRUTHERS

Mason Smith threw a five-hit shutout for the Spartans. He struck out four and walked one in a complete game. Cam Kreps, Mike Fetsko, Tyler Peterson and Marco Stilliana all drove in runs for Boardman (6-10). Luke Stauffer was 3 for 3 while Peterson and Kreps had two hits each. Nick Hodges allowed nine hits and struck out four in a complete game for the Dragons in the loss.

POLAND

Braden Olson allowed one unearned run on four hits and four walks for the Bulldogs. Olson struck out four in six innings pitched. Olson also had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored. Mason McCurdy had a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Poland. Zachary Yaskulka had a hit and an RBI. Devin Dutton took the loss for the Indians, allowing seven runs — six earned — on four hits and two walks in two-third of an inning. Matt Miles had a hit and two RBIs for Girard. Braydon Freeland had a hit and drove in one run while Anthony Cortese had two hits and an RBI.

Waterloo 15, Jackson-Milton 8

ATWATER

Waterloo led 10-0, but an eight-run fifth inning by the Blue Jays cut the lead to two. The Vikings answered with one run in the home half of the fifth and four in the sixth. Freshman Devon Curtiss had two hits, three runs and three RBIs for the Vikings (6-6, 4-4 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference). Luke Simons, Gavin English, Matthew Deangelis and Trey Huth all had two hits for Waterloo. Nick Rich took the loss, allowing two earned runs in three innings for the Blue Jays (6-8, 3-5). Kent Gross had three RBIs for Jackson-Milton. Frankie Prozy had three hits.

Zach Nolf allowed one run and two walks, striking out 13 in a complete-game three-hitter. Nolf also had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored for the Blue Devils. Logan Shields hit a home run with two RBIs. Jake Carfalo and Kyle Bickerstaff had hits for the Rams. Koby Zupco hit a double with an RBI for the Rams. Mark Bunch took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and six walks. Bunch struck out four in 51/3 innings of work.

LEETONIA

Winning pitcher Justin Sweeney scattered seven hits and struck out 10 for the Blue Devils (8-8, 4-5 Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference). Logan Bell’s hits included a triple. Sweeney and Tyler Welsh also had two hits. For the Bears, Brock Simpson and Sefton Houlette each had two hits.

Peyton Comer had five hits for Warren JFK. AJ Arp and Isaac Hadley each also had a hit. Arp got the win for the Eagles, who threw a two-hitter. Jacob Stephens took the loss for the Knights.

SHARPSVILLE, PA.

Sophomore righty Nick Osborne threw a complete game for Hickory, scattering five hits and allowing an unearned run. Osborne didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. Cam Whalen went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Clay Wiesen and Andrew Gay each collected a pair of hits and drove runs for the Hornets. Asher Patton, Jorge Leedham and Osborne also had hits for Hickory (5-1).

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.

Emily Holland threw a 13-strikeout one-hitter during a five-inning game at the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand tournament. Holland struck out the first 10 batters and gave up a base hit with one out in the fifth inning. Maris Barbato led the Irish offense with a solo home run and also had a two-run hit. Emma Ericson singled and doubled for the Irish. Maci Humphreys added a two-run double while Paige Brockway and Katherine Kali added RBI hits for Ursuline.

Lydia Spalding tossed a one-hitter, striking out eight for the Falcons (9-6, 6-1 All-American Conference Red). She hit two doubles. Kayla Kelty’s two hits included a double and she drove in two runs. Maddy Taylor’s two hits included a homer and she drove in two runs. Ashley Fuller doubles and singled while Lainie Simons doubled. Madison Fluent had the Tigers’ hit.

Emily Filicky and Sydney Bowser each had two hits for the Eagles. Kelsie Leshnak doubled. For the Wildcats Renee Leonard had two hits and Nic Pezzone doubled.

Madison Lester allowed one hit and struck out 16 in six innings for a Game 1 win. Lester and Lauren Maughan both had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs. In Game 2, Lester was home run shy of the cycle and drove in six runs for the Spartans. Lester also earned the win with 42/3 innings of relief. Lester allowed one run on two hits and a walk, striking out 11. Lauren Maughan had two his, including a double, with four RBIs for Boardman. Alicia Saxton and Nadia Rawhneh drove in two runs apiece for the Spartans. Carly Sheesley took the loss, allowing 10 runs — nine earned — on 11 hits and two walks in 31/3 innings pitched. MacKenzie Hamilton and Sidney Griffith hit home runs for the Dragons. Hamilton had two RBIs.

National high school swimming rules changed

INDIANAPOLIS

Effective with the 2019-20 high school season, a legal finish now requires the competitor to contact either the touchpad or the finish end coinciding with the individual stroke of the race. With this change, swimmers can legally complete a race by touching the finish end (end wall), regardless of whether the touchpad is activated. This rules revision, which affects the finish of all strokes used in swimming, was one of two swimming and four diving changes recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations Swimming and Diving Rules Committee at its March 24-26 meeting. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. The other major swimming rules change involved the protocol for uniform violations, which involved reorganization of Rule 3-3 to specify the penalty protocol for uniform violations. While the penalties associated with an illegal uniform did not change, a new process for communicating any violations to the competitor was approved. When an official discovers a competitor wearing illegal attire specifically dealing with suit coverage as described in Rule 3-3-2, the official shall notify the coach of the competitor to make the attire legal before he or she is eligible to compete — if the uniform violation is observed prior to the start of the heat/dive. If the competitor cannot comply without delaying the start of the heat/dive, the competitor is disqualified from the event/dive and is not eligible for further competition until the attire is made legal. Among the four diving rules changes was a change in degree of difficulty in the diving table in Rule 9-4. In a risk-minimization change, the degree of difficulty for back and reverse double somersaults was lowered to match back and reverse 11/2 somersaults. This change is consistent with the degree of difficulty assessed to back and reverse dives versus back and reverse somersaults. In Rule 9-5-6, descriptions of diving positions were adjusted to maintain consistency with national trends. Language has been updated to clarify requirements of the straight, pike, tuck and free positions. In Rule 9-7-4, the following Note was approved: “In a championship meet, the diving referee may consult with a designated member of the judging panel concerning a possible unsatisfactory dive.” Rule 9-1-3 regarding a fulcrum was updated to comply with industry standards. Searcy said the change aligns with current diving board manufacturers’ installation directions.
