YSU teams are in third after two Horizon League Championship rounds

Katlyn Shutt tied for first in women’s tournament

The Youngstown State men’s golf team sits in third place seven shots off the lead following Monday’s second-round action at the Horizon League Championships at Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon Golf Course.

The YSU women’s golf team also is in third place following the second-round of the Horizon League Golf Championships at Mission Inn Resort’s Las Colinas Course. Junior Katlyn Shutt is one of three golfers in the lead with a two-day total of 154.

MEN

During Monday’s second round, the Penguins carded a 298, which was a seven-shot improvement from an opening round 305.

The Penguins have a two-round total of 603 (305-298). Northern Kentucky maintained its first-round lead with 596 (298-298) while Wright State moved up to second with a two-round total of 600 (302-298).

Sophomore Zack Ford led the second-round charge for the Penguins carding a one-under-par 71. Sophomore Ken Keller was right behind, firing an even-par 72.

Keller jumped nine spots in the standings and will enter today’s final round tied for sixth with a total of 149. Ford moved up 11 spots and sits in 12th place after day two with a total of 150. Green Bay’s George Kneiser is the tournament leader with a two-round 140.

Senior Jason McQuown shot 75 to move up eight spots into 22nd place with 156.

Sophomore C.J. Hughes is in 17th place with 152. Kevin Scherr, a first-team All-Horizon League honoree, turned in an 82 and is in 29th place a with a 159.

WOMEN

Shutt is tied with a pair of Oakland golfers at the top of the leaderboard — Kylee Sullivan and Maddie Zack. Shutt was in 10th place following the opening round, but carded a second-day low round of 75 to move into a tie with the Golden Grizzlies’ duo.

In the team standings, YSU moved up one spot and had a seven-shot improvement to remain in the race for the title. After two rounds, the Penguins have a team total of 635 (321-314) and are eight shots behind leader IUPUI (627) and five back of second-place Oakland (630).

Joining Shutt in the top 10 is YSU freshman Puthita Khuanrudee who is in seventh place with 157. Khuanrudee, the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, carded a 79 on Monday after an opening round 78. In her second round, she had 12 pars and six bogeys.

Freshman Rattika Sittigool carded an 83 and her two-day total of 163 leaves her in a tie for 15th place.
