Frosh throws 54.17 meters in discus

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field teams were in action Saturday as they wrapped up competition from the Duke Invitational and Ashland Alumni Invitational.

Zach Gehm broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 54.17 meters, winning the invitational section of the event. He broke Josh Hacker’s record of 53.37m set back on April 7, 2001.

Dom Westbay finished third with a throw of 46.41 in another discus section.

In the women’s discus, Sammy Dyson was second with a personal-best mark of 42.30.

Katlyn Griffie finished second in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.55.

Westbay finished third in the invite section of the shot put with a 17.62.

Orlando opened the day with a third-place finish in the shot put after throwing the shot 16.50.

On the women’s side, Kaitlyn Merwin won the invite section after throwing the shot 14.58.

Nicolette Kreatsoulas earned a third-place finish in the other shot put section after throwing the shot 12.93m on her final attempt.

On Thursday, a select group of Penguins will travel to Philadelphia to compete in the 125th running of the Penn Relays.

Chad Zallow took first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.98 seconds. Collin Harden finished 12th at 14.54 seconds.

Jaliyah Elliott finished as the runner up in the women’s 100 after running 11.66 seconds. For the men, Josh Beaumont ran a season-best time of 10.72 seconds.

Cody Sikora came in ninth in the 400 after finishing in 48.15 seconds. Sikora’s time was a personal-best and the fourth fastest in school history. Harden finished 16th at 48.71 seconds.

Nicole Squatrito competed in the 800, running a season-best time of 2:12.77.

Collin Harden finished eighth in the 400 hurdles after running a time of 52.936 seconds.

Abby Jones finished third in the high jump at the after clearing the bar at 1.68m on third attempt. For the men in the high jump, Terron Taylor was seventh after clearing the bar at 2.02.

In the triple jump, Chontel Fils earned a fourth place finish after jumping 12.30m, while Chandler Killins recorded a season-best jump of 11.41.
