Vince Kehres to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Beaver Township

Vince Kehres, head football coach at Mount Union college will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Also, plans are under way for the 52nd annual Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Induction ceremony which is set for May 5 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The keynote speaker will be former Major League Baseball umpire John Hirschbeck.

5 YSU golfers named all-Horizon League

Youngstown

There was a major Youngstown State presence on the Horizon League Women’s Golf All-League teams released on Saturday as Katlyn Shutt, Puthita Khuanrudee, Victoria Grans and Rattika Sittigool were each recognized in a vote of the conference’s women’s coaches.

Kevin Scherr has been named First-Team All-Horizon League in a vote of the conference’s coaches on the men’s side.

Women’s coach Nate Miklos has been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second time at YSU.

Shutt and Khuanrudee were named First-Team All-Horizon League, and Khuanrudee was voted the Horizon League Freshman of the Year.

Grans and Sittigool both earned Second-Team All-Horizon League honors, giving the Penguins four all-league honorees for the first time in program history.

This season marks the first time in Horizon League history that a team has had three freshmen be named to the all-league teams.

Khuanrudee is the fifth Penguin to be named the conference’s Newcomer or Freshman of the Year, and the third since Miklos took over as head coach in 2013.

Scherr is the first Penguin to earn all-league recognition since Brandon Pluchinsky in 2016.

He is just the fourth YSU sophomore to be named All-Horizon League.

Scherr has participated in all 10 tournaments and 27 rounds this season with a team-best 73.7 strokes-per-round average.

The men’s and women’s teams will begin play at the Horizon League Championships today from Mission Inn Resort at Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Eastern Gateway splits doubleheader

AUSTINTOWN

Grant Williams’ two-run, walk-off homer with one away in the seventh inning helped lift Eastern Gateway to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Cuyahoga Community College in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday at Austintown Fitch High School’s Rich Coppola Field.

Tri-C won the nightcap, 11-1.

Evan Knaus, Antonio Walker and Williams each had two hits to pace the Gators (15-14, 9-9 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference) offensively with Josie Ayala picking up the win in relief of starter Derickmael Cuadrado.

In the nightcap, Jeremiah Papa and Kayden Kristophel each doubled as Dylan Dickey absorbed the loss.

EGCC will host Mercyhurst in a doubleheader Friday and Saturday at Rich Coppola Field.

Cobb, former NFL back, star, dies at 50

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Former NFL running back and University of Tennessee star Reggie Cobb has died at 50.

His death was announced Saturday by the San Francisco 49ers. He scouted for the team for the last 10 years, as well as for other clubs before them. Details of his death were not disclosed.

Cobb played in the NFL for seven years. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1990 and also played for Green Bay, Jacksonville and the New York Jets.
