Canfield High School senior football player Mehlyn Clinkscale formally announced his intention to continue his academic and football career at Gannon University at a letter of intent signing ceremony at the high school on March 29.

During his time at Canfield High School, Clinkscale was First Team Conference and MVP for Canfield’s 2018-19 season, during which the team made it to the Regional Finals.

Canfield High School Athletic Director Greg Cooper welcomed family, friends, classmates and teammates to the ceremony.

“There’s a lot I can say about Mehlyn. I remember when he joined us last year and he didn’t know anyone. He didn’t let that stop him. He is an exemplary student and exemplary athlete and we are happy he joined us for his senior year. As a student athlete he is a role model. He has done well here at Canfield, and we are more than happy to take a moment out of our day to join his family in celebrating this great accomplishment,” Cooper said.

Cooper then turned the floor over to Mike Pavlansky, head football coach.

“I wish Mehlyn all the best as he moves to the next level. I don’t know how you found us here at Canfield, but I am so happy you did. Mehlyn has been a positive influence on Canfield, both in the classroom and on the field. I know he will have great success Gannon. Best of luck,” Pavlansky said.

Clinkscale then said a few words.

“I want to thank my mom who pushes me the most and cheers me up when I’m down. And my brother, he’s my biggest fan and he hypes me up. To my friends, I came to Canfield not knowing anyone and now I fell like I know you. Thank you to everyone for supporting me and our team all the way. Thank you guys,” Clinkscale said.

To end the event, Clinkscale greeted and received congratulations from teammates, classmates, coaches, faculty, staff and family.
