C.H. Campbell Elementary School first-grade students presented “The Bear Went Over the Mountain - A Musical Journey of Friendship and Adventure” by John Jacobson and John Higgins at the Canfield High School on March 11.
The students were under the direction of C.H. Campbell music teacher Michael Fay.
In the story, there lived a bear with many friends, but he was restless. He thought surely there was more to life than eating honey and berries, and sleeping the winter away. He thought it was time to expand his horizons. One day Da Bear decides this is the day and begins his journey up the mountain in search of adventure and to see what he could see. Audience members were invited along to see what Da Bear and his animal buddies discover.
C.H. Campbell Elementary School principal Travis Lavery welcomed the large crowd.
“Good evening. Thank you for coming and for supporting your children in their amazing performance of ‘The Bear Went Over the Mountain.’ We believe in educating your entire child, not just academically, and that is where our amazing arts program comes in. I’d like to thank Mr. Fay for all his hard work in putting this program together. I’d also like to thank our administration for their support of the arts and of the performance taking place here tonight. So, without further adieu, we hope you enjoy ‘The Bear Went Over the Mountain,’” said Lavery.
With students dressed up in costume as such forest animals as deer, bunnies, chipmunks, turkeys, mice, badgers, raccoons, chicks, skunks, opossums and, of course, bears, the program opened with “Good Morning,” followed by scene one.
The second song was “This Is The Day,” followed by scene two. The students then all sang “Sing Your Own Song” and went into scene three. The students sang “Beware” before continuing the program with scene four.
The first-graders then gathered together on stage to sing “Forever,” followed by scene five. Scene six closed the show, with everyone joining in to reprise “This is The Day.”
The evening ended with a curtain call for the students and a moving standing ovation from their audience of family and friends.
