For more than 44 years, seventh- and eighth-grade students of the Boardman Glenwood Middle School bands, orchestras and choirs have participated in the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Junior High School Solo and Ensemble adjudicated events. This year, the event took place at Struthers High School on March 30. Glenwood Middle Band soloists and ensembles earned 38 “I” superior ratings and 5 “II” excellent ratings

Students prepare and then perform a solo or small ensemble for an Ohio Music Education Association adjudicator and receive a rating and a written sheet of suggestions and evaluations. Ohio Music Education Association rates solos and ensembles as “I” superior, “II” excellent, “III” good, “IV” fair and “V” poor.

District 5 includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties. Middle school musicians from the tri-county area participated in vocal and instrumental solo and ensemble events.

Band students receiving a “I” superior rating included: Ben Ams, Caleb Austin, Julia Basista, Deven Boyce, John Cagnina, John Cagnina, Harris Campbell, Alex Cole, Daniel Csernik, Anthony DeMain, Anthony DeMain, Gianna DeNiro, Morganne Evans, Morgan Hostetler, Vinnie Johnstone, Theresa Laverock, Angelo Marcella, Emma Moore, AJ Nigro, AJ Nigro, Jakob Owens, Nicholas Ricotilli, Logan Rosko, Anna Shevock, Anna Shevock, Autumn Slaven, Faith Sullivan, Evan Sweder, Jason Sweder, Savanna Watkins and Jacob Zenko.

Also receiving superior ratings were the seventh-grade flute trio, seventh-grade grade trumpet trio, eighth-grade ‘penny whistle’ flute trio, eighth-grade ‘flutonics’ flute trio, eighth-grade trumpet trio, eighth-grade flute quartet and eighth-grade ‘brother james’ flute choir.

Glenwood band soloists and ensembles receiving a “II” excellent rating included: John Cagnina, Carli Hamilton, Miies Leicht, Jacob Wolf and the eighth-grade horn duet.

Glenwood orchestra soloists and ensembles earned 31 “I” superior ratings and 21 “II” excellent ratings. Glenwood orchestra soloists and ensembles receiving a “I” superior rating included: Richard Booth, Vincent Dong, Carson Essad, Lizzie McCrea, Sloane McNally, Frederick Miller, Maddie Mraz, Megan Murphy, Catherine Olivier, Swathi Padmanabhan, Olivia Pickens, Jimmy Pirone Jr., Jaden Pusser, Abigail Russo, Morgan Russo, Lilly Snyder, Melinda Thompson, Madison Wymer, Ava Young.

Also receiving superior ratings were: Blevins-Bierlair duet, Callard-Hedrich duet, Murphy-Dong duet, Reese-Valdez duet, Yang-Musawar duet, LaCivita trio, Anzevino Qquartet, Congemi violin quartet, Miller quintet, Padmanabhan quintet, Sferra quintet and Waller quintet.

Glenwood orchestra soloists and ensembles receiving a “II” excellent rating included: Rebekah Bader, Ethan Boots, Jonah Bukovac, Kylie Dunleavy, Jordyn Fabian, Luke Leonard, Alex Micco, Angelina Nespeca, DJ Rubesich, Jayna Shaw, Vince Tran, Zenin Walkowiec, Owen Waller.

Also receinging excellent ratings were: DeRobbio-Erme duet, Picino-Bader duet, Yocum-Ward duet, Combis trio, Dravecky trio, Steele trio, Waller Violin trio and Pavlik quartet.

Glenwood choir soloists and ensembles receiving a “I” superior rating included: Andre Averette, Jasmine Le, Samantha Moon and Glenwood ladies ensemble.

Glenwood choir soloists and ensembles receiving a “II” excellent rating included: Neveah Alkire, Jene’e Hardy, Marcella Johnson, Christopher Woods and Boardman Glenwood chamber ensemble.

The next regular concerts of the middle school orchestras will be May 15, for grades five and six and May 16 for grades seven and eight at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The Middle School Orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Joel Monaco.

Upcoming events of the middle school bands will be April 26, at 7 p.m. featuring the middle school jazz ensembles as well as the combined eighth-grade band and the final concert of the year will be May 30, and will feature all bands in grades five through seven at 7 p.m. Both concerts will take place in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. Glenwood and Center bands are under the direction of Mike Shevock, Tim Tuite and Tom Ruggieri.

The choral department will present their spring concerts on May 14, with grades five and six at Center Intermediate School at 7 p.m. and on May 23, with grades seven and eight at the Boardman Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m.
