Smith hired as YSU swimming head coach

Youngstown

Brad Smith has been named the Head Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Coach at Youngstown State, athletic director Ron Strollo announced on Tuesday.

Smith previously served as the head women’s and men’s swimming and diving coach at Binghamton for the past five years. He also spent two campaigns as the head coach at Western Colorado, and he was an assistant coach at Maine from 2009-12.

At Binghamton, Smith coached six America East/ECAC Champions while his teams set 39 freshmen, pool, school and conference records in his tenure. Both programs were consistently honored by the CSCAA for their success in the classroom.

During the past two years, the Bearcats men’s program has finished runner-up at the America East Conference championship meet under Smith. At the most recent conference meet, Binghamton had 12 all-league selections — seven on the men’s side and five on the women’s side. Additionally, the program had four men’s student-athletes named academic all-conference.

Warriors’ Cousins has torn left quadriceps

OAKLAND, Calif.

DeMarcus Cousins has a torn left quadriceps muscle that will sideline the Golden State center indefinitely, a devastating injury that the Warriors feared was serious when he went down in the first quarter of their first-round playoff loss to the Clippers.

An MRI exam Tuesday morning on Cousins’ left leg revealed the tear. The Warriors say Cousins will begin immediately on his rehabilitation and updates will be “provided as appropriate.”

Coach Steve Kerr said after the Warriors’ 135-131 Game 2 loss on Monday night that Cousins would be out for a significant period of time.

Playing in just his second career postseason game after a nine-year wait, Cousins hobbled to the locker room at the 8:09 mark of the first quarter.

Racist messages sent to Cubs’ Carl Edwards

CHICAGO

Major League Baseball is investigating racist messages sent to Chicago Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. on Instagram this month.

Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after he had trouble with his motion and got off to a tough start this season. Lee Long, Edwards’ agent, said the messages came from a couple different people.

Theo Epstein, Cubs president of baseball operations, condemned the content of the messages and said the club supports MLB’s investigation, which was first reported by The Athletic.

“In a sport that celebrates diversity and unites people from all backgrounds, we are appalled anyone claiming to be a fan would send divisive and bigoted insults to a player,” Epstein said in a statement.

“Whether spoken, posted or published, this type of reprehensible language and views cannot be tolerated in our game or society.”

The 27-year-old Edwards, who is black, declined comment through a spokeswoman for the Iowa Cubs.

Edwards helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. He went 3-2 with a career-low 2.60 ERA in 58 games last year.
