YSU men’s golf finish S.C. tourney in 10th place

The Youngstown State men’s golf team finished 10th in the Southern Intercollegiate at Athens Country Club on Monday.

The Penguins finished with a two-round team score of 611 at the one-day event. YSU posted a 313 in the first round before coming back to record a solid 298 over the final 18 holes.

Zack Ford led the Penguins with a two-round 149 (80-69) to finish tied for 22nd. The sophomore’s 3-under-par 69 in the second round matched his low round of the season, and was YSU’s best single-round score of the day.

The round featured 12 pars, three birdies and his first eagle of the campaign on the par-5 10th hole. Ford made par or better on his final eight holes during the final round as he moved up 38 spots on the leaderboard.

Kevin Scherr was one stroke back of Ford with a two-round 150 (73-77) to finish in a tie for 25th. The sophomore’s 1-over-par 73 in the first round featured 10 pars and three birdies. Scherr also shot par or better on his first nine holes during the final session. Ken Keller carded a two-round 154 (78-76) to finish tied for 47th.

To round out the YSU lineup, C.J. Hughes turned in a 158 (82-76) and Jason McQuown finished with a 159 (82-77). On his very first hole of the second round, Hughes carded the third eagle of his career at the par-5 sixth.

South Carolina won the event by a dominating 20 strokes over runner-up Wofford. The Gamecocks fired a two-round team mark of 562 with rounds of 284 and 278.

The team’s second-round 278 was the lowest single-round team score of the tournament.

South Carolina also took the individual crown as Will Miles won medalist honors with an 8-under-par 136 (71-65). Miles’ second-round 65 was the lowest individual single-round performance of the event. Scott Stevens of South Carolina finished second with a two-round 140 (71-69).
