The 12-year-old son of Harmon Crawford, who found an intruder in the family’s barn in Lackawanna Township, Pa., was tied up by the man and the barn set on fire. The boy managed to hop out of the barn to safety. Damage was estimated at $3,000.

1969: U.S. Sen. William B. Saxbe, R-Ohio, urges the U.S. Department of Justice to consider blocking the planned merger of Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. and Lykes Corp.

Vandals go on a rampage with rocks and BB guns damaging 13 cars in various parts of Youngstown.

Secret Service agents in Cleveland arrest Paul Lamonge Jr., 57, of Niles and charge him with possession of $50,000 in counterfeit $100 bills.

1944: Robert Chapman, 47, of Youngstown rides nearly half a mile down the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks in his car that was being dragged by a freight train. He escaped injury.
